Johnson Stokes & Master split from Mayer Brown takes effect https://lnkd.in/gkGmfEnz The Law Society of Hong Kong has approved Mayer Brown’s plans to spin-off Johnson Stokes & Master (JSM) and is now in its initial stages of completion. JSM, with 125 lawyers moving across with the firm, has regained its independence after a 2008 merger with Mayer Brown. Mayer Brown has formed a separate Hong Kong branch consisting of 26 lawyers. JSM's Terence Tung will lead the management committee alongside Hannah Ha, Geoffrey Chan and Keith Cheung. Currently, among JSM’s 125 lawyers are 43 partners, and the firm has offices in Beijing and Shanghai. The Beijing office has seven lawyers, led by Tom Fu and Ian Lewis, while Zhao Chunchun heads the intellectual property agency. Andy Yeo manages the Shanghai office. Mayer Brown Hong Kong has 12 partners among its 26 retained lawyers, with Thomas Kollar specialising in capital markets. In addition to Hong Kong, Mayer Brown has offices in Singapore and Tokyo. The surge in transactional activity in Spain, with deal values jumping 40% in the first half of 2024, is a testament to their strategic prowess and ability to navigate challenging market conditions. 📈 Key Highlights: - Garrigues led the pack, advising on $18.3 billion in deals, capturing 52.3% of the Spanish M&A market. - Uría Menéndez closely followed, with $17.8 billion in deals, securing 50.8% of the market. - Cuatrecasas excelled in deal volume, working on 62 mandates, despite a lower total deal value of $1.7 billion. It has been an absolutely amazing yet exhausting week thanks to a successful #ICCA2024HK. With over 1,400 people in #HongKong for such a short period of time plus the need to keep up with our day jobs, I am surprised that I (and many others) are still standing.... Nevertheless, what better way to end such an exciting week than with wonderful news for Withersworldwide's APAC DR teams from Benchmark Litigation. For such a young (yet clearly strong and getting stronger) practice here in the APAC region, we are ranked in 11 practice areas with 11 of our DR lawyers (Chenthil Kumarasingam, Ivan Cheong, Justin Yip, Shaun Leong, FCIArb (梁立雄）, Deborah Barker, Amarjit Kaur, Shashi Nathan, Joseph Chu, Michael Chik, Jocelyn Tsao, and me!) also being ranked for 2024!
