This fall marks the 10 year anniversary for the Interdisciplinary Health Sciences Institute at the University of Illinois. The anniversary recognizes a decade of important achievements and milestones for both the institute and university. Since 2014, society’s greatest health challenges have been addressed through interdisciplinary collaboration, translational partnerships, and innovation. Take a look at some of the achievements throughout the decade: 🔶 The Carle Illinois Research Affiliation was established 🔷 Research development in clinical/translational neuroscience, precision medicine, and cancer 🔶 The CIC became the world’s first engineering-based college of medicine 🔷 Cancer Center at Illinois was established “One of the best things about the team at IHSI is their ability to adapt to emerging priorities, to lead initiatives that some think impossible, and to build partnerships across the campus, community, and beyond. This ‘can-do’ attitude makes IHSI the place to turn when you need a trusted partner to accelerate health research and innovation,” - IHSI Senior Director for Research & Core Development Gillian Snyder. Congratulations to PhD student Rinni Mamman on joining UBC's Public Scholar Initiative's 2024-25 Cohort and receiving a Public Scholars Initiative Award! The Public Scholars Initiative Award is part of the UBC Public Scholars Initiative (PSI) which intends to build connections, community, and capacity for doctoral students interested in explicitly linking their doctoral work to an arena of public benefit and integrating broader and more career-relevant forms of scholarship into their doctoral education process. Each year funding is available for up to 30 new students from all faculties at UBC and UBCO. Rinni's doctoral work with RHSC Supervisor and OSOT Assistant Professor Julia Schmidt focuses on exploring public perceptions about people with traumatic brain injury (TBI). To change the many existing misconceptions about TBI, Rinni aims to first understand current public views, and then reshape these misconceptions through the implementation of innovative methods. Many postdoctoral trainees hear that they need to make a big splash with NIH funding, particularly a K99/R00 award, to get a tenure-track faculty position. We in the Office of Training & Workforce Development (OTWD) know that this is a fish tale. While we can’t tell you what your specific chair, in your specific department, at your specific university or institution requires in their tenure-track faculty hires, on a national level, funding is not a critical factor in obtaining most tenure-track faculty positions. See our publication in Science Advances for more information on myths and facts about getting an academic faculty position in neuroscience: https://lnkd.in/g-vi9Y3C #trainingtuesday #phdlife #mermaid

You are an exceptional researcher.
After graduating Summa Cum Laude from the College of Wooster as a first-generation Palestinian-American student I have had the privilege of joining the Postbaccalaureate Research Education Program (PREP), at CWRU School of Medicine. During this time I have been able to join Dr. Catherine Collins' lab and have gotten to expand my neuroscience research skills. I have also been able to take a graduate-level course and attend many seminars that have opened the world of research for me. Recently, I presented a poster at CWRU School of Medicine Research Day. I am incredibly grateful to the NIH for funding scholars such as myself and the help of the Collins lab to enhance me as not only a scientist but also a person.
