It was a pleasure, as always, to join friends (old and new), industry peers, and a broad range of professionals for an event hosted by the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce. The convening consisted of a presentation and illuminating panel discussion, "Shaping the Future of Downtown: Catalysts to Ensure Success," both addressing Massachusetts Taxpayers Foundation's recent research on economic disruption in Downtown Boston. As one of the region's leaders in building construction, civil and utility infrastructure construction, and general contracting, particularly for projects with public or commercial outcomes, it's imperative that BOND Brothers, Inc. keep our finger on the pulse of these ongoing issues and their implications. While Massachusetts, and specifically Boston, has experienced tremendous growth over the first part of this century, COVID fundamentally changed how people work and where people want to live and what worked for us for the first twenty years will not work for us for the next twenty years. Boston is not the only city that is facing this reality but we have to use this inflection point to reinvent ourselves by leveraging our strengths in education, health care and life sciences and finding new ways to ensure Boston and Massachusetts are affordable and family-friendly destinations for residents and tourists alike. The Mass Taxpayers Foundation's full report, which I highly recommend familiarizing yourself with, is here: https://lnkd.in/d3qxq8_H and you can watch the presentation here: https://lnkd.in/dWeRFVA4

Are you part of mastermind groups? Imagine being in a room with some of the brightest minds in energy efficiency, all gathered to discuss how we can make our buildings more sustainable. That was my reality at a NYC Accelerator service provider symposium. The focus of our conversation? Local Law 97 and how we can help buildings minimize their carbon footprint. As a consultant for NYC coops and condos, I and we at The Folson Group are always looking for ways to create efficiencies and promote sustainability. It was a "𝗵𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱" discussion with other fellow NYC Accelerator partners. The law is ambitious, but if we collaborate with others, we can get our buildings there and make NYC safer and more sustainable. But here's my question: 𝗗𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝘂𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗲𝗻𝗱 𝗴𝗼𝗮𝗹? Give this a like and LMK in the comments. #Sustainability #collaboration #RealEstate

The idea of a Third Space was coined in the late 1980's, and things are very different now, so what do we do? How do we create a Third Space in our Building Projects? What's the new Third Space, today? When the Third Space was defined in the 1980's, our home life, work life, and the things we did for fun were physically separated, and technology wasn't connecting us at all times. In the 1990's, even the TV show Friends was centered around a coffee shop, which was one of the prime examples in the original idea of a Third Space. Today, everything's more muddled than ever, but having space to explore, congregate, and enjoy the things we love is as important as ever. It may be even more important, when we consider the negative impact that a overly-digital life can have on us, and in particular our kids. It turns out that people still want spaces to be with each other and enjoy the activities that we love. We've seen this over the last few years, when travel has spiked and people are clamoring to get out of their house, and find this home away from home. This is the new Third Space(+) It's about creating an ecosystem in our built environment, that supports the home life, the work life, and makes space for our passions, our hobbies, and things we do for fun. This new home away from home creates spaces and business models that support us in a variety of ways, allowing us to work within this muddled reality of work/ life/ play, but having enough separation so that we can enjoy each aspect, and not just be constantly distracted. It's a mix of uses put together in an engaging way that supports our work, our play, and families. More in the video. https://lnkd.in/eP7qtyyR

On a recent walkthrough of our latest adaptive-reuse project on Laurier, Linebox Partner and Lead Architect, Josée Anne Pronovost talks about the benefits and challenges of repurposing an existing office building. Transforming the original building into residences is no small or easy task but there are some considerable benefits to doing so. Sustainability and lessening the impact on the neighbourhood during construction are just a few. Watch this short clip for more on what Josée Anne has to say. https://lnkd.in/gAQjRRQt
