👏 Great Initiative! "Building Connections: Year 4 Students Mentor Year 1" Earlier this semester, our Y4 students from the BSc in Construction Management and Quantity Surveying programmes stepped up to guide and inspire the next generation! In a casual, student-led mentoring session, the experienced 4th Years shared their insights, tips, & advice with the 1st Year students. The session created a friendly, open forum where the 1st Years had the chance to ask questions about the courses, the workload, and life as a student in the programme. From study hacks and time management to real-life advice about internships and career pathways, the 4th Years provided invaluable advice based on their own experiences. The atmosphere was relaxed and engaging, with honest discussions. A huge thank you to our 4th Year Mentors for taking the time to give back and support their peers. You’ve shown the true spirit of leadership and collaboration! The PACE program is offered at MILLER CAREER & TECHNOLOGY CENTER in the Katy Independent School District. The acronym stands for Professional Advancement through Career Education. PACE is a competitive course offered to graduating seniors only, which has gained popularity over the last few years. PACE students must have a GPA of 3.8 or higher to apply – in other words, high achievers drawing the top students from across the district. During the present 2023 – 2024 school year, R.G. Miller | DCCM partnered with PACE, by providing a 17-week internship for graduating senior Nicholas Ding. Nicholas, a student at Seven Lakes High School worked with various members of our engineering teams under the guidance of R.G. Miller’s President, Mark Gehringer, PE, Chief Executive Officer, Jack Miller, P.E., and Vice President of Development Operations, Caleb Stone. It was an ideal partnership as Nicholas learned first-hand about the industry and multitude of projects currently under development in and around the Houston metropolitan area. Being guided by several of our industry’s most knowledgeable mentors, Nicholas gained hands-on experience in a professional workplace environment, attended learning sessions, participated in daily team meetings, and earned honors credit with PACE. Nicholas plans to attend Texas A&M University in the fall with an engineering major. #RGMiller #DCCM #DesignDevelopGrow #sevenlakeshighschool #paceprogram #katyisd #ATM #CivilEngineering #LandDevelopment #SiteDevelopment #Engineering #Development #Engineers #PublicWorks #Sustainability #Hydrology #Transportation #GIS #WaterResources #Water #Wastewater #WaterInfrastructure

🚧 Inspiration from the Next Generation 🚧 A couple of weeks ago, while travelling on the Crossrail from Heathrow Airport, I witnessed something truly inspiring. Three young children were eagerly calling out (almost screaming) the names of various construction equipment as we passed the Old Oak Common HS2 site. One of the equipment's being described as an "excabator" where they tried multiple times to get the "v". The common theme though - Their excitement and curiosity about the construction world were palpable. It made me wonder: where does the disconnect happen in our education sector? Why aren't more school leavers entering Construction? Only 3% of school leavers are going into the sector! Three solutions that the new government need to endorse and support: - Enhanced Industry-Education Partnerships: Establish stronger collaborations between construction companies and educational institutions. This can include guest lectures, site visits, and hands-on workshops led by industry professionals to give students a real-world understanding of construction careers. - Comprehensive Apprenticeship and Internship Programs: Continue to develop and promote apprenticeship and internship programs that provide practical experience and mentorship for students. These programs should be well-structured, offering clear pathways from education to employment within the construction sector. - Incorporating Construction into STEM Curricula: Integrate construction-related topics into STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) curricula at schools. This can involve project-based learning where students can engage in building models, understanding construction technologies, and learning about sustainable practices in the industry. The passion and interest are clearly there from a young age. As industry professionals, we need to bridge this gap and ensure that these budding enthusiasts see construction as a viable and exciting career path. Let's work together to inspire and educate the next generation about the opportunities in our field. #ConstructionIndustry #FutureBuilders #Education #Inspiration #HS2 #Crossrail #OldOakCommon

For some, the more traditional academic route into engineering doesn’t work for them, for a variety of reasons. So it is great to see schemes like this from the University of Strathclyde, providing an alternative. This will help open the career path to many more individuals who have a lot to offer the industry but would otherwise struggle to take the first step. Have you experienced a similar Graduate Apprenticeship type scheme, either undertaking it yourself or knowing colleagues who have? As well as providing an alternative method of learning for the individual, what other benefits did you see from the scheme? https://lnkd.in/emcdEsqa #DifferentMakesADifference #TogetherMakesADifference #ApprenticeshipSchemes

Understanding blueprints is crucial for anyone in the construction industry. They are the key to transforming designs into reality! Here are some tips to get you started: *Know the Symbols: Familiarize yourself with common symbols and legends. They provide essential information about the materials and components used. *Scale Matters: Always pay attention to the scale. It helps you understand the actual size of the structures being built. *Read with Purpose: Start with the overall layout before diving into specific details. This will give you a good sense of the project's flow. *Stay Organized: Keep your blueprints neat and organized. Use a scale ruler for accuracy and take notes where needed. *Practice: Like any skill, reading blueprints gets easier with practice. Engage in hands-on activities to apply what you've learned! 🔨💪 Are you ready to kick-start a career in the construction and building trades? As we enter October, Careers in Construction Month, we applaud the professionals who play vital roles in building our communities and shaping our future. In construction, we begin by laying a solid foundation—just as we should with our students, giving them the tools and opportunities to build their path in the construction industry. It’s a myth that underrepresented inner-city youth cannot meet the rigorous demands of the ACED field. Our Youth Construct interns not only have the potential, but they’ve proven themselves in some of the most prestigious ACED organizations. Let’s celebrate #CareersInConstructionMonth by continuing to construct brighter futures for our youth! #ACED #InternshipsMatter #BrighterFutures #jobs #careers #AccessOpportunitiesAlternatives #communitybuilders

The annual report on engineering in Ireland has another addition. It was interesting to see that engineering is seen as interesting work, well paid, with plenty of jobs, and important, but not for everyone. I disagree with that last point. I think engineering is for everyone; if you enjoy solving challenges, that is the biggest part of engineering.
In what has been a fantastic Engineers Week with nationwide engagement from schools and industry, we will continue to inspire students to hunt out the incredible, innovative, and varied career that engineering provides. Today, we are releasing the 7th edition of Engineering 2024: A Barometer of the Profession in Ireland. The report highlights engineering is a thriving profession with around 60,000 in employment, and 26,000 being members of Engineers Ireland. Engineering is also considered a fascinating, well-paid, and rewarding career. Education is an important part of engineering with almost 6,000 graduates from engineering third-level courses in 2022. Apprenticeships are a great route into an engineering career, 14% of organisations who responded already have apprenticeships, with plans to grow the number of apprentices employed.
