Department of Energy and Climate’s Post

Local renewable energy zones (LREZ) will be established in Caloundra and Townsville, with the installation of community battery storage—all to help enhance the community’s renewable energy generation. The LREZ will facilitate local energy generation, storage, and distribution across existing electricity infrastructure. Working hand-in-hand with Energy Queensland’s local network-connected batteries, the LREZs will allow the benefits of renewable energy to be accessible to all in the community, including people who cannot invest in solar. This includes renters, vulnerable customers and those who live in unit complexes. Functionally, LREZs will operate courtesy of households equipped with rooftop solar panels transferring excess energy generated during the day into local batteries. This stored energy will then be distributed back to the community during the evening peak when solar production is minimal, but energy demand is high. Both LREZs will see the deployment of up to 8.4MW/18.8MWh of battery storage and support up to an additional 2.8MW of solar PV. The benefits will be shared across residential and commercial customer sites, starting from January 2025. LREZs like these are part of a broader network of renewable energy zones (REZ) across the state. These REZs connect various clean energy sources—such as wind and solar projects—across large regions in a coordinated manner. Ultimately, they act like a modern-day equivalent of power stations and help put downward pressure on electricity prices, attract investment, create jobs, and improve outcomes for regional communities and industries.
