Brazil successfully concluded the B20 Summit marking the end of their presidency. South Africa takes over the presidency of the B20, synchronising with the country’s presidency of the G20 for 2025. Next year will therefore be extremely important for the country to showcase itself to the world as we host both the B20 and G20 summits. President Cyril Ramaphosa has urged that we use the opportunity to shine a light on local business opportunities with a view to increasing foreign direct investment, but also to present an African perspective, particularly with the African Union having been formally admitted as a member of the G20. It gives South Africa the chance to shape the debate: as part of the process, South Africa has an opportunity to introduce additional custom priority themes while hosting next year’s B20 and G20 gatherings.

Rio De Janeiro, The Gulf Observer: A UAE delegation led by Saleh Al Suwaidi, UAE Ambassador to Brazil and Sous Sherpa to the G20, actively participated in the Fourth G20 Sherpa Meeting held in Rio de Janeiro from 12th to 17th November. One of the striking features of the B20 summit in Sao Paulo, Brazil last week, which I attended as part of the business delegation, was that South Africa’s problems are certainly not exclusive: many other countries are battling with the same sort of deep-seated problems that we are grappling with. On Friday, Brazil successfully concluded the B20 Summit marking the end of their presidency. South Africa takes over the presidency of the B20, synchronising with the country’s presidency of the G20 for 2025. Next year will therefore be extremely important for the country to showcase itself to the world as we host both the B20 and G20 summits. I experienced many questions about our business-government collaboration and it’s a reminder of how important it has been, and will continue to be, as we execute the numerous reforms that prevent our economy from operating at its full potential. South Africa will take the helm of the G20 for the year 2025, a notable moment for the African continent and the Global South. This presidency is especially significant following the African Union's recent admission as a permanent member of the G20 during India’s G20 Presidency in New Delhi. India had infused the G20 with new purpose and relevance. By organizing the Voice of the Global South Summit, both before and at the end of its presidency, India decisively shifted the G20 agenda from the concerns of developed countries to those of developing ones. This shift was clearly reflected in the New Delhi G20 Declaration. South Africa's G20 presidency is a chance to ensure that the needs and perspectives of the Global South are at the forefront of global discussions. President Cyril Ramaphosa has emphasized the importance of international solidarity and the fight against hunger, climate change, and the governance of artificial intelligence. Before South Africa passes the G20 baton to the USA, it will be crucial to amplify South-South Cooperation. By working together, countries of the Global South can leverage their collective strengths to address shared challenges. South Africa's presidency will promote inclusive dialogues between governments, civil society, and corporations, continuing the innovative practices initiated by Brazil. It is essential for South Africa to consolidate the positions of the Global South and hand over to the US a solid legacy on these issues, ensuring that the agenda of the Global South is not diluted or undermined. The G20 presidency offers South Africa a chance to advocate for more effective reforms. Progress on issues such as sovereign debt, the IMF's Common Framework, and improving the World Trade Organization's dispute settlement mechanism which would further help the objective of inclusive growth. South Africa🇿🇦 has made history as the first African country to assume the presidency of the G20, a powerful bloc of 19 countries, the European Commission, and the African Union. This significant milestone, which highlights Africa’s growing influence in global decision-making, officially begins on December 1, 2024, and will span a year. President Cyril Ramaphosa accepted the mantle from Brazil during the G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro, marking a pivotal moment not only for South Africa but for the continent as a whole. President Ramaphosa expressed his deep honour at assuming this leadership role on behalf of South Africans. In his address to G20 leaders, he emphasised the importance of bridging the gap between global decision-makers and the people whose lives their policies affect. “It is an honour to take over the G20 presidency for the next year on behalf of the people of my country,” he stated. He pledged to focus on making the presidency a platform driven by civil society, underscoring the necessity of inclusivity and dialogue in shaping international policies. Under South Africa’s presidency, the G20 is expected to prioritise pressing issues such as global economic stability, sustainable development, and equitable access to resources. G20 Presidency moves to 🇿🇦 🙌 From the 1st of December 2024 South Africa will assume the G20 Presidency. It will be the first time that Africa which is the continent with the most young people in the world will host the G20, and the youth are excited to start their work. “This is a historic moment for developing countries, for the connections of the Global South, because these countries will be able to ensure that the voices and issues concerning them are well communicated. Often, the Global South's countries do not have an adequate role on the international stage, and now they are involved in this process, creating a new voice and a new sense of development,” said Lutfiyya Dean, head of the delegation of South Africa at Youth 20. The G20 is made up of 19 countries (Argentina, Australia, Brasil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Russia, Türkiye, UK and USA) and two regional bodies: the African Union and the European Union. The members of the G20 represent around 85% of the world's GDP, more than 75% of world trade and around two-thirds of the world's population.
