5th ISA Forum of Sociology International Sociological Association (ISA) Call for Abstracts (Deadline: October 15, 2024) RC02 Economy and Society I organize the session: Shaping the Future: The Role of Economic Sociology in Deciphering Expectations and Perspectives in Promoting the Bioeconomy The development of the bioeconomy promotes the sustainable use of renewable biological resources as a potential solution to contemporary challenges. By contributing to a circular and sustainable economy, the bioeconomy is analyzed through the lens of economic sociology, which studies the interactions between economic processes and social, cultural, and political structures. This session examines the expectations and perspectives of different social actors about the bioeconomy, using a theoretical approach based on socio-technical futures, path dependency, and political economy. It highlights how expectations about the future shape present actions and influence governance and policies. With this session, we seek to explore the different perspectives of economic sociology studies to examine how expectations and narratives about the future shape the decisions and actions of social actors in the bioeconomy. We emphasize the importance of inclusive and transparent governance, integrating diverse perspectives to ensure sustainable development, thus aligning economic practices with social and environmental objectives. #ISAforum25 #Morocco #bieoconomy #biodiversity #future #EconomicSociology https://lnkd.in/dmjuRtZK

Call for Abstracts: Current Sociology Monographs Translation and transformation of class through migration: Rethinking social and spatial mobility across contexts. This Monograph brings migration studies into dialogue with the sociology of class to interrogate how these two fields intersect. Recognising the challenges that contemporary migration presents to extant approaches to conceptualising class, contributing papers will present cases from diverse global contexts as a source of theory building. We take inspiration from the need to translate between concepts, systems, languages and cultures in migration studies, and argue that considering class from migration contexts provides opportunities to develop a new grammar of class theory. Through migration, class boundaries are formed, changed or dissolved, and new classed practices and positions emerge. The social and spatial mobility inherent to migration processes invites us to move away from epistemically centred approaches to class and reframe our thinking through comparison and conceptual translation. Papers are invited that respond to these theoretical challenges. Deadline for 300 word abstract: 1 September 2024. In 2020, I conducted a series of academic sociology sessions in Pashto, focusing on French society. (First season of Sociology in Pashto!) These sessions, held in collaboration with the French cultural center in Kabul and presented in their main hall, brought together many young participants. One of the key discussions in these sessions was about the paradigm of complexity, as articulated by the esteemed philosopher and sociologist Edgar Morin. Edgar Morin, who is now 103 years old, is not only a scholar of remarkable intellectual depth but also an extraordinary example of longevity and lifelong dedication to knowledge. These sessions led me to an important realization: for thinkers and intellectuals, the most valuable lesson from societies like France is to think independently about one’s own society and its issues. We must strive to understand, deeply explore, and work on our society without damaging it through imitation or by undermining its values. During these sessions, I observed how the alienation of intellectuals from their own society—or the gap between educated individuals and the majority in Afghan society—creates a disconnect. This alienation leaves us unable to address critical social challenges effectively. Instead of expecting the majority to align with us, we must develop empathy for them, engaging with their realities to inspire meaningful change. Here is the link to one of the sessions: https://lnkd.in/dqZfJwaF Special thanks to the team at INSAN Foundation for Research and Media and the French Cultural Center for their collaboration and support. #sociology #AfghanSociology #FrenchSociology #Intellectualinitiative

When one studies sociology, there's no way back that we try to visualise and reinterprete or rethink societies through sociological lens. Appreciating diversities and mainstreaming these diversities with an inclusive approach is one of the fundamental crux of sociological interpretation of the societies. Our every action in an everyday world is very much sociological. It is very important to apply our sociological knowledge when we visualize our societies through sociological understanding. Little everyday observations are phenomenal teachers. Sociology is not restricted within textbooks and not just theory. It is very much within our daily chores and activities . These comprehensions and dialogues are important between everyday lived realities and one's ability to apply theoretical sociological knowledge. For example, today I observed that IndiGo (InterGlobe Aviation Ltd) has introduced a brail safety instruction card which I feel is one step closer to inclusivity for passengers on board . This is what we meant by one step closer to " Leaving no one behind" when we talk about Sustainable Development Goals by United Nations. I haven't seen it before so maybe it was launched much earlier and maybe adopted by other aviation companies. Kudos to IndiGo (InterGlobe Aviation Ltd) for such efforts as it is much needed and promotes diversity and inclusion. What is the recent incident or observation that make you think about diversity and inclusion ? Feel free to share as making Sociological Dialogues are important. #Diversity #Inclusion #AppliedSociology #SociologyInterpretation #EverydaySociology #SociologicalDialogues
