The concept of “Viennese Classicism” is more a product of nationalist ideology than historical accuracy. In our latest Mozartrazom article, “Bohemia or Moravia: Reconfiguring Music History,” we examine how German historiography has distorted the legacy of composers like Antonio Vivaldi, Giovanni Battista Sammartini, and Christoph Willibald Gluck. Why do we continue to overlook the cosmopolitan nature of 18th-century music in favour of a mythologised “Holy Trinity” of Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven? Our research highlights the need to rethink periodisation in music, applying the same cultural and historical standards used in literature and philosophy. If you’re interested in a critical re-evaluation of music history that cuts through nationalist narratives, this article is for you. Read more: https://lnkd.in/d6hNbV7j “Music history should not bow to nationalist myths. It should reflect the diverse, cosmopolitan reality of 18th-century Europe.”

ThrowbackThursday: Celebrating the rich traditions and folk influences that have woven their way into classical music! Today, let's shine a spotlight on two legendary violinists who have left an indelible mark on the world of music. Nathan Milstein's legacy is as timeless as the melodies he played. His refined technique and interpretations of classical repertoire transported audiences to ethereal realms. Yet, what truly sets Milstein apart is his profound advocacy for preserving and promoting Jewish folk music. Through his performances, he illuminated the beauty and resilience of his cultural heritage, bridging the past with the present. Gidon Kremer, a virtuoso beyond compare, dared to tread uncharted musical territories. His exploration of Eastern European folk music breathed new life into age-old melodies, infusing them with passion and vitality. Kremer fearlessly challenged traditional boundaries of classical music, venturing into bold collaborations with contemporary composers. In his hands, the violin became a vessel for cultural exchange, uniting diverse traditions in a harmonious symphony of humanity. As we reflect on the legacies of Milstein and Kremer, let's remember the power of music to break barriers, transcend boundaries and connect hearts. Their unwavering dedication to preserving and innovating within the confines of folk influences continues to inspire generations of musicians worldwide. Here's to honoring tradition while embracing the endless possibilities of artistic expression! #CnjAssociates #ClassicalMusic #FolkInfluences #MusicalLegends

Its improvisational nature mirrors the democratic process, embodying dialogue, participation, and freedom of expression... Music offers a unique and powerful opportunity to enhance Inter-American relations. Through its universal language, it bridges divides, celebrates diversity, and unites us in our common humanity. As we move forward, let us continue to harness the power of music to create a more harmonious world." Check out my latest with Jeff Tobin on Inkstick Media: https://lnkd.in/eQBQHRUz

At Perpich, we believe in the power of the arts. Why is arts education important? Here's one reason. #WednesdayWhyArtsEd Music: it gives voice to democratic ideals, to the powerful and the powerless, across borders and beyond barriers, and to generations of citizens – from all walks of life – worldwide. Since world renowned composer Aaron Copland headed to South America during World War II and the more widely known Jazz Ambassadors sang scat behind the Iron Curtain from the 1950s through early 1970s, the United States called upon American musicians and artists to use music as a diplomatic tool to promote peace and democracy. Now, the United States is elevating music even further through public-private partnerships with American companies and non-profits, to use music to meet the moment, convey American leadership globally, and create connections with people worldwide. On September 27, 2023, the U.S. Department of State launched the Global Music Diplomacy Initiative, which builds on existing music diplomacy efforts and delivers upon the bipartisan Promoting Peace, Education, and Cultural Exchange (PEACE) Through Music Diplomacy Act that President Biden signed into law. This Act called on the Department to use public-private partnerships to support music diplomacy. In addition, at the September 27 launch, the Department announced the first Peace Through Music Award. The award recognizes and honors an American music industry professional, artist, or group, that has played an invaluable role in cross-cultural exchanges and whose musical work advances peace and mutual understanding globally. https://lnkd.in/d2i9_sUh

"Nothing exists without music, for the universe itself is said to have been framed by a kind of harmony of sounds, and the heaven itself revolves under the tone of that harmony." -- Isidore of Seville ============= (in the capital and largest city of the Spanish autonomous community of Andalusia and the province of Seville) The city of Sevilla (or Seville, in English) is found on the lower reaches of the Guadalquivir River, in the southwest of the Iberian Peninsula. It is Spain’s leading inland port and fourth largest city. Originally an Iberian town, Sevilla prospered under the Romans in the 2nd century BCE. From the 5th-8th centuries CE it was the main city in southern Spain under the Vandals and the Visigoths. In 711 it fell to the Moors, and under Muslim rule it was a cultural and commercial center until the 13th century, when Spanish Christians under Ferdinand III captured it. Around 1500 Sevilla became the center of the Spanish colonial trade with the Americas. The French occupied the city (1808–12), and during the Spanish Civil War (1936–39) it was held by the Nationalists. It is now one of Spain’s main tourist centers, with historic mosques, cathedrals, and the 12th-century Alcázar Palace (shown here). + Seville has a municipal population of about 701,000 as of 2022, and a metropolitan population of about 1.5 million, making it the largest city in Andalusia, the the 26th most populous municipality in the European Union. Its Old Town contains a UNESCO World Heritage Site comprising three buildings: the Alcázar palace complex, the Cathedral, and the General Archive of the Indies. The Seville harbor, located about 80 kilometers (50 miles) from the Atlantic Ocean, is the only river port in Spain. The capital of Andalusia features hot temperatures in the summer, with daily maximums routinely above 35 °C (95 °F) in the months of July and August.
