Banning booze from the bowl.. Prioritising Profits Over Rugby? Recent matches at Lansdowne Road have highlighted the deteriorating atmosphere. While the IRFU implements various entertainment strategies, they seem to be overlooking a fundamental issue - their alcohol policy of allowing booze in the bowl is the problem The constant flow of fans to and from their seats creates a distracting environment that undermines the game’s integrity. This raises a critical question. Is the IRFU prioritising alcohol sales over its core mandate to promote rugby for genuine fans? Is it appropriate with so many children around? As a recipient of state support, the IRFU has a responsibility to foster an appropriate environment, especially for our kids. Yet, the current atmosphere suggests a focus on maximising bar profits. It doubles down on rugby’s awkward relationship with booze which is at odds with healthy sport. The article notes that “atmosphere happens when a number of people are collectively invested in the outcome of a match.” How invested can fans be when they’re constantly queuing for drinks or navigating crowded aisles? Are the IRFU compromising the quality of the rugby experience - and potentially the performance of our national team - for financial gain? As they’re not being asked to stop selling alcohol it’s time for the IRFU, like other Irish sports, to just ban booze from the bowl-what’s so difficult with that?
