To strengthen #OHLAUSA’s safety culture, we spend time evaluating and carefully planning the most effective way of communicating with our field teams. We have found safety equipment demonstrations, Toolbox Talks, and Safety Stand-Downs given by both industry experts from our company and third-party guest speakers resonate particularly well. During #ConstructionSafetyWeek in our Southeast Civil Region, OHLA USA worked closely with OSHA and Travelers Insurance representatives to carry out an OSHA 30-hour class, informative lectures, and demonstrations in both English and Spanish at our truck bases and job sites in Miami, Fort Myers, and West Palm Beach. Major topics included the FOCUS FOUR, which are the four highest incidents of fatalities in construction. Much time was spent on reviewing important measures to prevent falls, struck-by incidents, caught-in or between incidents, and electrocutions. A big thank you to our Safety Director, Steven Mayberry, Leny Chango, our OSHA liaison, and Dennis Mantjos, Risk Consultant from Travelers Insurance, for taking the time to speak to and participate with our dedicated workforce. Spark Safety Conversations on Your Construction Site: Engaging Toolbox Talk Ideas Toolbox talks are a crucial component of keeping construction crews safe. But let's face it, keeping these talks engaging and relevant can be a challenge. Here are some tips to breathe life into your toolbox talks and maximise their impact: 🛠 Keep it short and sweet - Aim for 10-15 minutes to maintain focus and avoid information overload. 🛠 Get interactive - Encourage participation through questions, discussions, or even demonstrations. 🛠 Tailor it to the task: Ensure the topic directly connects to the work your team is about to undertake. 🛠 Consider seasonal factors: Address specific safety concerns relevant to the current time of year, like hot weather or winter hazards. 🛠 Mix up your content: Don't stick to the same old topics. Explore a variety of issues from PPE and fall prevention to hazard communication and specific task-based safety. By incorporating these tips and keeping your talks concise, interactive, and relevant, you can turn toolbox talks into valuable opportunities to boost safety awareness, empower your crew, and foster a positive safety culture on your construction site. #construction #safety #toolboxtalk #safetyculture #myhiltigb #constructionmanagement #workplace #prevention #crew #engagement

The MCASF Safety Committee, dedicated to enhancing worker safety, has been instrumental in fostering a culture where safety is ingrained in daily operations, moving beyond mere compliance. Today, the committee takes a significant stride by advocating for 360-degree head protection in the event of falls, introducing climbing helmets for elevated work, or any conditions where falls are likely. Why is the MCASF Safety Committee advocating for transitioning from traditional hard hats to climbing helmets? The work of our trade creates significant exposure for traumatic brain injuries and head trauma associated with falls – even falls from a short distance. Unlike hard hats, climbing helmets equipped with chin straps ensure head protection and, most importantly, remain intact during a fall. Offering protection from the front, back, sides, and top, climbing helmets surpass the limited coverage provided by traditional hard hats. During last week’s MCASF Membership Meeting, presenter George Stallings provided an informative talk on the evolution of hard hats, noting that traditional hard hat technology has changed minimally since hard hats were first introduced over 100 years ago. George went on to provide several demonstrations of how safety helmets offers far-superior head protection. If you’d like to learn more about helmet-stye hard hats and the benefits of migrating your team away from the old-style traditional hard hat, please click here to contact MCASF Safety Consultant Debra Tambaschi. #mcasfla #MCASF #LU725
