Conventional paths rarely lead to extraordinary places. Whenever I say this, I often hear, “But… there’s so much risk! Isn’t that scary?” But here’s a question to consider: is it more terrifying to take that leap, or to live a life that doesn’t fully reflect your individuality, your ambitions, and your passions? For me—and for Timothé Dufour—that choice was clear from the day we met. We shared a vision to help students break free from fake limitations and see the vast potential in creating their own path. And that’s exactly what this event is about. Our speakers have been where you are and will share the insights they've gathered along their exceptional journey. And here’s a shout-out to Matilda Morella, our incredible Creative and Communications Director at SV Industry. I chased her for months to join, she hesitated, wondering if comms was really “her thing.” But now? She’s doing a brilliant job, and the results speak for themselves! 💥 Join us for an event that isn’t just about careers—it’s about breaking molds and making your own rules. 📅 Date: Tuesday, November 26, 2024 📍 Location: EPFL, SV 1717 🕒 Time: 5:15 PM - 7:00 PM See you there! Research and innovation at Niagara College: Solutions for industry Through applied research and innovation transfer activities, the team at Niagara College provides real-world solutions for businesses, key industry sectors, and the community. Let’s work together We have three potential ways you can engage with us. First, we can collaborate on an applied research project. Funding sources cover most project costs, including labour, materials, and administration, with a 1:1 match from an outside industry partner (combination of cash and in-kind contribution). We take on the administrative legwork, so the industry partner doesn’t have to apply for or secure their own funding. Industry partners must meet funding criteria to qualify (often 2+2 model in years in business plus number of employees). I had a fantastic time speaking at the #ICEF Monitor Global Summit yesterday. I was part of a great panel on "Beyond the Big Four" looking at how competition for #studentrecruitment was increasingly happening outside the major anglophone destinations of the USA, UK, Canada and Australia. My fellow panellists Jessica Turner, Edwin van Rest, Prof. Dr. Florian Hummel and Joanna Kumpula all brought great insight to the nature of shifting demand for destinations, ably set up and facilitated by our moderator, Peter Thompson. I came away from the panel with two main thoughts: 1. Will we look back on 2023-2026 as the years when higher education exports permanently shifted away from Anglophone dominance, or as a blip in the status quo? Despite a series of shocks historically, student numbers to the 'Big Four' have grown remarkably steadily - but with three of those four moving quite aggressively to hold student numbers in check over the past 12-18 months, that may be about to change. It's up to universities in Europe, the Middle East and East Asia to deliver great student experiences and outcomes for international students and snatch a chunk of market share off the Big Four permanently. 2. Universities in the UK, Australia and Canada must think seriously about how to deliver #TNE effectively, at scale and sustainably in major international markets in order to be both hedged against shocks to inbound student numbers, and to support and participate in the growth of outstanding higher education sectors globally. It can be done but it is a major strategic decision, it is a serious investment and it is not a panacea for financial challenges in the home country. I think those institutions who transition into truly multi-national forms over the next decade will find themselves with very strong options compared to those that remain firmly locked in one place. Thanks to ICEF for hosting us and I hope attendees enjoyed the panel as much as I enjoyed being on it!

As higher education rankings become increasingly competitive, demonstrating commitment and impact towards sustainability is crucial. Beyond asking about initiatives put in place to promote sustainability, rankings want to see how institutions are measuring the impact of those efforts. QS Quacquarelli Symonds and Times Higher Education recently added questions specifically to this point, joining AASHE #STARS.
