Macaulay Honors College and the Design Trust for Public Space have partnered on New York: City Designed, a program aimed at providing students interested in the planning, design, and preservation fields with a hands-on understanding of the forces that have shaped their city and access to careers in those sectors. “Building on Design Trust’s experience in seeding agency to new forms of leadership, we are proud to partner with Macaulay’s exceptional student body, empowering a new generation to be the leaders we all need,” said Matthew Clarke, Design Trust for Public Space Executive Director. “The inaugural New York: City Designed cohort were passionate, engaged, and inspirational. Our partners were universally impressed by these students and what they offer for our city’s future.” https://lnkd.in/dsy-QZiV

That’s the message Lulu Lytle, OBE, from Soane Britain shared in her stirring session at the 2024 Design Leadership Summit in Edinburgh, where she delivered an urgent call for the creative industry to commit to the protection of craft skills and the culture of craftsmanship. From the stage at McEwan Hall, Lulu called on her fellow creative leaders to pick up the mantel of preservation, ensuring specialty techniques and skills survive for a new generation––and the good of the whole design industry. In the early 2000s I helped organize and moderate town hall meetings, in person and online. Results and reactions were often mixed. Engaging residents in solving urban problems can lead to better solutions, bolster public spirit, and deepen democracy. It can also disappoint, when expectations are misaligned, and interactions are unproductive. This new city leader guide offers research-based guidance on designing civic engagement efforts in cities.
