Had the pleasure of attending Professor Ben Hopson's kinetic design workshop recently (in fact, this is the second time), where we explored his stunning collections and heard his fascinating journey into the world of kinetic design. His work in developing the Kinetic Design minor at SCAD is truly inspiring! Simply said, Kinetic design is about making physical movement as additional value in a product. "Kinetic design can reposition parts of their structure, and in that way change the appearance of the product, function or add other qualities and transformation possibilities." The value of kinetic design can be seen in architecture, art installation, and industrial design. Who can resist a fun-looking gadget that could change its shape and structure? I took his KDES 310 course two years ago after attending this workshop for the first time, which was an amazing introduction to prototyping and iterative design. The skills I learned back then continue to guide and inspire me in my current industrial design projects. (I am still improving the final design in that class. Hopefully, it will meet you soon.) Ten Material Things is the title of a new talk that I recently gave to our Industrial Design students at RISD. Professor Paolo Cardini posed the seemingly simple challenge to me, to select and lecture on ten materials that have had an impact on the field of industrial design. Seemed easy enough, but soon became very complex! Water had to be one; it’s my favorite material and is endlessly fascinating. I'm excited to announce that I will be presenting at #SimBuild 2024, happening from May 21st to 23rd in Denver, Colorado. I will introduce ANT, a multizone indoor air quality (#IAQ) and ventilation analysis plug-in for the algorithm-aided design platform #Rhino3D #Grasshopper. ANT, short for CONTAM-in-ANT (contaminant), integrates the widely recognized IAQ and ventilation modeling tool #CONTAM with the powerful 3D architectural design platform, Rhino Grasshopper. This development leverages the newly developed CONTAM application programming interfaces (APIs), ContamP for project establishment and ContamX for simulation, developed by my colleagues at #NIST, W. Stuart Dols and Brian Polidoro. With ANT, users can analyze natural and mechanical ventilation, multizone air contaminant transfer, conduct risk and health assessments, track human exposure, and perform urban-scale modeling. Thanks to the robust 3D modeling capabilities of Rhino, ANT enables interactive visualization and analysis of IAQ and ventilation results through contours, vectors, plots, and animations. Additionally, it can integrate with other powerful plug-ins on Grasshopper to perform more complex tasks, such as optimization of design and system settings, and co-simulation with CFD tools. Our goal is for this tool to aid in the design of sustainable and healthy buildings and cities, and ultimately create a climate-resilient future. ANT is now available for free on #Food4Rhino.
