“The audience comes last. I believe that. I'm not making it for them. I'm making it for me. And it turns out that when you make something truly for yourself, you're doing the best thing you possibly can for the audience.” —Rick Rubin When I describe how I temper my inner artist at work, I often frame it as the balance between personal expression (art) and solving problems (design). But in practice, it's not so binary. Rubin’s perspective resonates deeply, even in the data-driven world of product design. While his art is music, where audience response feels secondary to his personal connection to the work, the same principle holds for design. Yes, we research user needs and validate ideas through testing, but before any of that, the designer’s instinct—their "for me" moment—sets the foundation. For me, that instinct leans toward modern, minimal interfaces—clean typography, restrained palettes, thoughtful use of color as affordance. If I’m designing a publishing platform, I aim for the essence of what Medium once was: intuitive, uncluttered, and elegant, where every interaction feels deliberate. This isn’t just personal indulgence; it’s where design starts. If a solution doesn’t feel right to the designer—if it doesn’t strike that chord of satisfaction that comes from refining chaos into clarity—then it has little chance of resonating with an audience. Rubin’s approach reminds us that the creative process, even in the corporate trenches of product design, is still a deeply personal act. The "me, first" mindset doesn’t undermine the audience; it ensures they’ll get the best version of the work. It’s not pure art—capitalism ensures that—but it’s still creation. And when done well, it bridges that space between what feels right for the designer and what ultimately works for the user.
