Whenever I hit creative blocks on big ideas, I shift my focus to the smaller, yet essential elements of the design. By putting together the pieces and exploring these details from different angles, It often helps to unlock new creative solutions. #exploringcardui #mobileappui #bookingconfirmationui

Singular XQ's friend Kai has described how we approach design at SXQ--not all of our designers focus on visual design. They focus on complex system design. I would say this is a return to the original "business value of design"---because Jobs was keen on the visual, that is the part that people came away with when McKinsey published the Business Value of Design, which created an influx of people with visual design training in print culture flooding into software. I have known design leaders with top salaries talking about things like widows and orphans in responsive design--and they are unaware of the complexity of controlling for widows and orphans in responsive layouts---and using other similar principles of print design. They are agnostic to tech solutions, even though the tech solution impacts the front-end design dramatically. They have no idea why you need to know the number of APIs feeding into a container app to design well for it. They have no idea why their sketched solution should be rejected in terms of feasibility and effort. Nor do they know how to generate an alternative solution that incorporates those needs because they think they don't have to. Technology design is cross-functional. Full stop. They can neither generate empathy for nor understand the needs of the engineers and then complain that the engineers won't allow them to be part of the solution. They show contempt for "code heads," "devs," or "eng." To which I say, so why are you in software? Kai's brilliant answer with his typical laser-sharp way of expressing his ideas is not a new development but an older one that comes back into focus now that many of the elements of "UX design" are becoming automated and being taken over by AI-driven design libraries. I hope that it takes root and drives change.
I just had a brief exchange with Marc Hemeon over a statement he made about how Design applies broadly beyond its visual paradigm. From that perspective, I am fascinated with how we're evolving into a more complete notion of designing solutions, products, and experiences. This is a renaissance of sorts. #design #futuredesign #evolution

is it kind? What if designers first asked, is it kind? What if the measure of design was how well it cared for people and their relationships rather than how profitable it was? The International Design Day theme for 2024, ‘is it kind?’ is about building kindness into design practice. #idd2024 #internationaldesignday #desgn
