Oftentimes, we only realise the value of good product design when something breaks, leaving us to wonder: Why wasn’t this built to last? Thanks to Veerappan Swaminathan and his team of dedicated repair coaches who run free Repair Kopitiam clinics all around Singapore, the public can learn how to fix their broken items. These monthly clinics aim to break the cycle of throwaway consumption by igniting a repair movement in Singapore. Veera, who is a mechanical engineer by training, learned through his volunteering experiences that the best way to encourage more sustainable lifestyles is to directly engage the community. With Repair Kopitiam, he has designed a model for learning, connection, and empowerment that diverts trash, builds awareness of our consumption choices, and fosters greater appreciation of good product design. To read more about how Veera is creating a powerful repair movement across the heartlands, head to bit.ly/pod-repairkopitiam. – Organised by the DesignSingapore Council, People of Design celebrates the everyday visionaries who are delivering extraordinary impact through design. These innovators defy the stereotype that design is only for designers or that it is merely about aesthetics – it is a tool for positive change that is accessible to everyone. #DesignSingaporeCouncil #PeopleOfDesign

Learning valuable new skills, connecting with your community, and appreciating the ingredients of more sustainable living (including well-considered product design) feels good. Just ask the Repair Kopitiam coaches! There’s a team of around 1,200 volunteer repair coaches driving the Repair Kopitiam initiative with co-founder Veerappan Swaminathan. Their network of free monthly repair clinics for the public is their conduit for spreading the culture of mending all around Singapore. With the number of clinic locations steadily growing and repair slots being quickly booked out, it’s clear that they are building a movement. Shifting mindsets about consumption and diverting objects from the trash are their twin goals. Newly formed friendships among coaches make the experience that much sweeter. Sustainable production. What’s that all about…. As part of our ongoing efforts to contribute to a more eco-friendly advertising industry, we’ve begun reexamining our processes and investigating new ways of working. We start by breaking down our core concept to find opportunities to leverage sustainable practices while keeping creativity and quality at heart. When an initial concept involves a multi-location shoot with set construction and flying in a Director and DOP from abroad, this will have a big influence on the production’s carbon footprint and makes it a great candidate for more streamlined and sustainable ways of working. With a little ingenuity, we are often able to move our productions closer to more environmentally friendly workflows. 🎥 Take our recent collaboration with Profijt Meubel Nederland, for example. We shot this project in our own studio, taking advantage of our in-house LED lighting and re-using previously fabricated decor assets updated by our marvelous set designer Nicole de Werk. Combining these sustainable elements also allowed us to keep crews lean. As with every production, there were logistic challenges along the way, but we managed to work as sustainably as possible within the boundaries of time and budget. We are continuously learning with each production that we take on and our sustainability expertise has grown alongside that journey. And although it is not always possible to source clothing from our pre-existing stock AND build the entire set with recycled materials, we see it as a challenge to take a small step in the right direction over and over again. 💬 Are you interested in learning more about how we're making greener ads or would you like to use our studio for your next shoot? Send us a message! Let's work together to make advertising more sustainable for everyone. #SustainableAdvertising #Drbarefoot #greenproduction See the advertisement here: https://lnkd.in/eYgsCSD9

Gabriel Kay has brewed a groundbreaking solution to e-waste with his award-winning "Osiris" modular kettle. Designed to be repairable with just a screwdriver, this innovative product allows anyone to replace defective parts with ease, addressing the throwaway culture of small household electronics. Inspired by the Egyptian god of rebirth, Osiris is a beacon for sustainable design and practical DIY solutions. Gabriel’s vision for the kettle began at Leicester’s De Montfort University, where he aimed to revolutionize the repair process, making it feel as simple as swapping a vacuum cleaner dust bag. His work has earned him accolades from New Designers and Green Grads, where he continues to champion sustainable ideas that "heal the planet." Green Grads founder Barbara Chandler applauded Gabriel’s efforts, emphasizing that repairable products like his kettle can reduce waste while encouraging longevity in design. As e-waste grows at alarming rates, Gabriel’s creation shines as a practical and scalable solution to help tackle this global challenge. Original author: Robin Eveleigh .
