Added a clause to my contract incentivising clients with a 20% discount if they agree to me sharing in-progress work publicly while a project is underway. I find that many noteworthy (even meme-worthy) moments are missed during the course of a project where the work is confidential, and a single portfolio entry at the end of the project with a few approved mockups — that doesn't really cut it. I used to think being a freelance designer was super difficult. Until I became an agency owner 😂 The reality is that running an agency is 10x more challenging than being a solo designer. But here's what I've learned about making the switch: Start with a solid foundation: 👉 Keep your full-time job initially 👉 Save 6-12 months of runway 👉 Build a small client base first 👉 Network before you need it Common mistakes to avoid: 👉 Hiring too quickly 👉 Undercharging for projects 👉 Taking on every client 👉 Neglecting processes What 𝑎𝑐𝑡𝑢𝑎𝑙𝑙𝑦 works: 👉 Focus on specific industries 👉 Create systems before scaling 👉 Partner with other freelancers first 👉 Build recurring revenue streams The truth is, I wasn't prepared for: 👉 Managing team dynamics 👉 Handling multiple projects 👉 Leading client relationships 👉 Dealing with cash flow But despite the challenges, running an agency has been my most rewarding career experience.
