Adaptive reuse of buildings and minimizing embodied energy (grey energy) are crucial for achieving climate neutrality. Equally vital measures are the efficient use of resources and reducing operational energy consumption in buildings designed for long-term use. Numerous strategies can reduce a building’s environmental impact. With this June issue, we spotlight six diverse projects that are taking steps towards a climate-neutral future in very different ways. Choosing to move beyond a restrictive mindset, we feature not only urban timber constructions and adaptive reuse with building extensions but also a concrete building and a vacation home in a field. These include two apartment buildings in Barcelona and Eindhoven with low-tech solutions and circular construction. In Lot, France, a new school building by Dietrich Untertrifaller generates more energy than it consumes and the BOB Campus by Raumwerk.Architekten in Wuppertal leverages a site-specific resource for sustainability: existing structures. Upholding this ethos, we pledge to continue delivering projects aligned with best practices in sustainability, guided by pivotal agreements such as the Paris Agreement, the RIBA 2030 Challenge, and the UK's ambitious target of achieving net zero emissions by 2050. Engineers, urban planners, designers, and other professionals in the built environment have an important role in responding to climate challenges through our work. We know that a third of the world’s waste is produced by the built environment sector alone. Human systems must co-exist and evolve together with nature to promote the health of our people and the planet, so we’re calling on professionals in the built environment to adopt a regenerative design approach by breaking away from the ‘take, make, waste’ cycle, to reverse ecological damage and regenerate planetary health. I’m proud to share Arup’s new report, Regenerative Design: Towards living in harmony, which outlines practical steps you can take to implement regenerative design principles. It also reveals how designers around the world are already doing this - from this building in Harare, Zimbabwe, which is designed like a termite mound to stay cool without air conditioning, to an approach in Singapore where concrete is made from demolition waste and metals.
