Thinking of studying in Canada? Consider the below changes to prepare well for your study abroad journey. Canada continues to be a leading destination for international students, but 2024 has ushered in major updates to the rules under the International Student Program (ISP). These changes, introduced by Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), are designed to strengthen the program's integrity, promote fairness, and improve efficiency for students. Revised PGWP Eligibility Criteria Starting November 1, 2024, the eligibility requirements for the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) have been updated. These changes depend on the timing of your study permit application and the specific program of study. Updated Off-Campus Work Hour Limits Effective November 2024, international students can now work up to 24 hours per week off-campus while classes are in session, an increase from the previous 20-hour limit. This adjustment seeks to balance academic priorities with the opportunity to gain work experience. Discontinuation of Flagpoling for PGWP Applications The practice of flagpoling—temporarily leaving Canada and re-entering to receive same-day immigration services at the border—has been discontinued. PGWP applications must now be submitted online or through standard immigration channels within Canada, improving system efficiency and integrity. Termination of Student Direct Stream (SDS) As of November 2024, the Student Direct Stream (SDS) and Nigeria Student Express (NSE) visa programs have been officially discontinued. New Spousal Open Work Permit Criteria In 2024, stricter criteria were introduced for spouses or common-law partners of international students applying for open work permits. Eligibility now extends only to those whose partners are enrolled in professional degree programs at the master’s or doctoral level.
