I spy with my little eye something familiar in this picture- front and center! I love seeing my book, Support and Retain Educators of Color, used in the context of pushing forward institutional change. I wrote this book not as a cute intellectual exercise but a how-to guide for education and organizational leaders to cultivate workplaces that affirm and retain educators of color. This Friday, I will be presenting insights from my book surrounding affinity group implementation at Center for Black Educator Development Black Men in Education Convening. See you there? #education #equity #BlackMenInEducationConvening #BMEC2024 #Blackteachersmatter

Say it loud! 📣The arts are essential and a human right! To limit students access to arts education is to deny critical opportunities for social emotional development as well as other critical aptitudes: Confidence, creative problem-solving, cultural awareness, communication, conflict resolution, collaborative empathy and self-awareness. Decreasing support for arts education limits the ability for low-income communities to envision the many possible pathways that exist in both arts and non-arts professions. The proposed cuts disproportionately impact students in those communities.
Arts education is critical to young people’s success. Join us and call on the New York City Council & Mayor Eric Adams to save #ArtsEd programs on the chopping block. #ItStartsWithTheArts! Learn more at bit.ly/iswta.

In a recent edition of Exchange Every Day dedicated to embracing families, communities, and culture, Monica Wells, our family and community program administrator, shared her deep connection to families and communities and how it positively impacts children's success. "Strong, authentic relationships between our families, students, and educators are key. We must speak life into our students, cheer them on, teach them the skills, and provide the tools they need to be prepared for the future. We must show examples of the power, importance, and necessity of community." Read more here: https://lnkd.in/gc7ur8uu

Powerful societies are strategic in teaching their children their way of life, philosophy and culture. What is the Saint Lucian vision philosophy and culture? Do we teach it nationally? The Youth Summer Arts Platform is but one critical seed in nation building and citizen development.

The attack on public schools is an attack on equity in our education system. Traditional public school districts in Ohio serve more than 1.8 million students and employ more than 245,000 Ohioans. An investment in our public schools is an investment in our nation’s 50 million public school students. #fundpublicschools #nationalpublicschoolsweek

Check out this reflection from engageDC Site Leader, Garima! "In my role as Site Leader, I’ve gained hands-on experience in planning and facilitating meetings, managing scheduling, leading a dedicated team, and collaborating closely with my supervisor to uphold ArtReach’s mission: building connections between people and their communities through the power of art."

As this semester wraps up, I've been reflecting on some of the experiences that have shaped my growth, especially my involvement with the GW Honey W. Nashman Center for Civic Engagement and Public Service. This year, alongside my ongoing volunteer work with Little Friends for Peace, I stepped into the role of Site Leader for ArtReach GW. ArtReach GW serves over 300 children and families annually, offering free, high-quality visual arts education through classes, exhibitions, and events for communities in DC’s Wards 7 and 8. In my role as Site Leader, I’ve gained hands-on experience in planning and facilitating meetings, managing scheduling, leading a dedicated team, and collaborating closely with my supervisor to uphold ArtReach’s mission: building connections between people and their communities through the power of art. Additionally, I’ve had the unique opportunity to observe art therapy group sessions with the GW Graduate Art Therapy Program. These sessions have confirmed my passion for art therapy and strengthened my career aspirations in mental health. I’m excited to continue working with the Nashman Center and contributing to meaningful community engagement throughout my time at George Washington University!

This blog post truly reflects our profound learning experience in Montgomery, Alabama. It truly reflected our mission of “Leadership for Just and Humane Schools” at the National Superintendents Roundtable. What a power symposium!
🚨 New Blog Post! 🚨 Reflections from Montgomery, A Superintendent’s Notes I recently had the powerful opportunity to visit Montgomery, Alabama, with fellow superintendents. This experience was not just about learning history—it was about confronting the unfinished legacies of slavery, segregation, and systemic injustice that still shape our nation today. From the Freedom Monument Sculpture Park to the Legacy Museum and the National Memorial for Peace and Justice, this journey challenged my understanding of America’s past and my role as an educator in shaping its future. Now that I know—what will I do? More importantly, now that “we” know—what will “we” do?
