🌟 Brent Cross Town - Creating Flourishing Communities 🌟 I’ve got a special connection to the Brent Cross Town project. From the new towers rising from the old industrial area, I’m reminded of where my parents first met—my dad driving buses in the 60s and my mum working at Collindale Hospital. I can also see the area where they were married—coincidentally, the same place where I was married—and the park where I taught my daughters to ride their bikes and bowl leg breaks. Although I was born in Willesden, my parents decided to move to Bedfordshire for what they hoped would be better opportunities, leading me to grow up in the small village of Toddington—the same village as Kevin McCloud. I often reflect on how different my life might have been if we had stayed in Willesden and if the opportunities my parents thought were lacking in the 1970s had existed. That’s why working on Brent Cross Town and contributing to the Flourishing Index feels so meaningful to me. It’s a way to connect my personal history with the future of the area. What excites me about Brent Cross Town is more than just the redevelopment. It’s about creating a community where people have access to opportunity—to green spaces, a healthy lifestyle, and the chance to thrive—elements that everyone deserves. Here’s to a future where Brent Cross Town can be a beacon for creating flourishing communities and a place where everyone has the chance to succeed! 🌳🏙️ Check out the full document and see how Related Argent plan to turn this vision into reality: https://lnkd.in/dSdsCB-s #BrentCrossTown #CommunityRevitalisation #UrbanDevelopment #CreatingSpaces #LevelingUp

Here’s a redevelopment to celebrate for its attempt to uplift a community and economically empower its residents. I often reflect on the poor reputation of developers for being profiteers focused on owning property, but here’s a solid example of how they can also be community-oriented, with the goal of enabling residents to take ownership of their community. This is the power of a place-led cooperative. “Fillmore District, Freedom West Homes’ next iteration will stand as a beacon of equity and inclusivity, rooted in a storied history of community resilience. Established in the 1970s, amid the aftermath of redlining practices and urban renewal policies, the development was envisioned as a bastion of affordable housing and socioeconomic stability to counteract the displacement caused by redevelopment efforts. Today, with 382 co-op–owned housing units spread over four city blocks, Freedom West Homes remains a testament to the enduring spirit of its residents. In collaboration with the co-op and its commitment to revitalizing the neighborhood, the project will embark upon a transformative journey. DLR Group’s design approach prioritizes community empowerment and social cohesion. The reimagined and renewed Freedom West Homes will honor its legacy while modernizing for future residents of the community. From the creation of contemporary, accessible housing units to the integration of community spaces and amenities, as well as the lasting economic opportunities that will lay the foundation for wealth accumulation and socioeconomic advancement, the revitalized development will provide residents with a renewed sense of pride and belonging in their neighborhood.” Jose Sanchez Urban Land Institute https://lnkd.in/eejA4x5y

Our cities are built of neighborhoods. And our neighborhoods were built with a hundred little things (benches, bike lanes, parks, sidewalks, light posts, flower gardens, cafes, street vendors, etc.). What would happen if we took our dreams to rebuild a better neighborhood and combined it with our ability to do little things? Maybe we could build a better block. Here are my thoughts on building a better block based on what started in Oak Cliff, Texas (near Dallas) and spread from Portland to Detroit and Melbourne to Tahran. https://lnkd.in/gi8HVnmd *What are your dreams for rebuilding a better block in your city?

After much debate, the Dallas City Council has voted to adopt Forward Dallas 2.0, a comprehensive city planning guide that aims to shape the future of our city. While it’s seen as a necessary step to address rapid growth and housing demands, some view it as controversial, with the potential to drastically alter Dallas neighborhoods for decades. How do you feel about this decision? Is this a move toward a more inclusive and sustainable city, or are you concerned about the impact on existing communities? Let us know: Are you #NIMBY (Not In My Backyard) or #YIMBY (Yes In My Backyard)? 🏘️🌆 #DallasPlanning #CityGrowth #ForwardDallas2

In 2023, San Francisco issued 1,136 residential building permits. It was the lowest total since the Great Recession in 2007. This August, the City of San Francisco, Wilson Meany, and Stockbridge Capital Group are set to release the first high-rise apartment complex developed as part of the Treasure Island Community Development Project; a large-scale redevelopment initiative aimed at transforming Treasure Island and its adjacent Yerba Buena Island into a vibrant, sustainable, and private mixed-use community. This development signals a potential resurgence in the city's residential growth and offers a glimpse of hope amidst market challenges. "Gentle Density" is our vision for sustainable, community-focused housing. Instead of overcrowded high-rises, we believe in creating low-rise, high-density affordable housing that fits seamlessly within suburban neighborhoods. Our approach? Placing 6-8 prefabricated studio units on standard suburban lots, allowing for thoughtful growth that encourages neighborhood integration. By scattering these units every few blocks, communities expand sustainably, welcoming new neighbors without disrupting the fabric of single-family tracts. It’s a model that supports affordable living, neighborhood cohesion, and long-term community building. Let’s rethink density, together.
