Pencils - a basic educational necessity that all schools should have available to their students at all times!
This is one thing I think shocked me the most as someone who moved to the US from the UK and became a first time Mum here - school supply lists.
For me "school supplies" included a back pack with lunch and a pencil case that was filled with things I did not need (like scented gel pens cause they were all the rage). All other supplies (pencils, pens, scissors, rulers, calculators [yes even my algebraic ones] and so on) were all provided by the school.
The stress for both teachers and parents that the school supply list creates here is unfortunate. Parents panicking about having the funds to get the full list, teachers panicking whether all parents can get the list or if any of their wish list items (which 9/10 are still necessities) will be brought is not setting our kids up for success nor does it teach them about the benefits or sharing, returning what you borrow, keeping things nice for others to use in the future etc.
Supplying the schools with the tools they need to educate with goes beyond stocking a curated library, we need to stock the schools with all the basics so that teachers can focus on lesson prep and parents can focus on creating excitement for the upcoming school year!
