🚀 Celebrating the Power of Interdisciplinary Research! 🧠⚛️ The Nobel Prize in Physics 2024 has just been awarded to Pr. John J. Hopfield and Pr. Geoffrey E. Hinton “for foundational discoveries and inventions that enable machine learning with artificial neural networks!” This amazing recognition is a powerful and exciting acknowledgement of the incredible potential of academic research at the intersections of #Mathematics, #Physics, and #ComputerScience to lead to #innovation breakthroughs in tech. 🌌🤖 They have been pioneers in the field of Deep Learning and energy-based models, paving the way for much of what we see in modern AI today. Did you know Frank Wilczek has made seminal contributions to fundamental particle physics, cosmology and the physics of materials? When Wilczek was only 21 years old, and a graduate student at Princeton University, he and David Gross defined the properties of colour gluons, which hold atomic nuclei together. Since then, he has focused on some of theoretical physics' pressing questions. Wilczek received the 2004 Nobel Prize in Physics “for the discovery of asymptotic freedom in the theory of the strong interaction." "I was attracted to particle physics because of three famous names, Nishina, Tomonaga and Yukawa, who were the founders of particle physics in Japan," said physics laureate Yoichiro Nambu, who gave us a better understanding of elementary particles and their interactions. The Department of Physics will organise a colloquium titled "The Mystery of the Invisible Universe: A Window to New Physics" by Prof. Anjan Ananda Sen (Professor, Centre for Theoretical Physics at Jamia Millia Islamia) on 5th November 2024 [Tue], 3:30 PM to 4:30 PM (IST). All are cordially invited. [Abstract] Cosmological observations have confirmed that only 4-5% of the total energy content in the Universe emits light and hence visible. The rest 95-96% of the energy content of the Universe is invisible and can only be detected through their gravitational interactions. This invisible Universe has tremendous potential for testing physics beyond our standard understanding of physical interactions and to reveal new physics that may play an important role in the Universe at large cosmological scales. In this talk, I shall introduce these invisible Universe at pedagogical level and also briefly discuss the current and future efforts to unravel the mysteries of the dark Universe, including those in which India is actively involved.
