[Call for papers] "Critical Perspectives on Entrepreneurial Ecosystems" - The Journal of Technology Transfer Entrepreneurial Ecosystems are the focus of an explosion of research in the area of #innovation, #entrepreneurship, and regional competitiveness. This Special Issue invites critical examinations of entrepreneurial ecosystems theory and its empirical applications, aiming to refine and advance entrepreneurial ecosystems research. The special issue is intended to be a ‘safe space’ for authors to engage in bold thinking and to revisit and challenge existing assumptions using rich data in an environment that might be more sympathetic to new ways of thinking than the usual journal publication process. It will explore the challenges entrepreneurial ecosystem thinking faces, including ambiguities in its definition, the remarkable heterogeneity in empirical applications, and its relevance for policy. In encouraging submissions that address these issues head-on, this Special Issue will serve as a platform for dissecting the theory's current challenges, offering new perspectives, and proposing directions for future research. The submission deadline is October 15, 2024. Together with my supervisor, Prof. Erik E. Lehmann, and my colleague, Dr. Katharine Wirsching, we are very excited to announce our new article published by Springer Nature Group in the Journal of Technology Transfer, "Entrepreneurial universities and the third mission paradigm shift from economic performance to impact entrepreneurship: Germany’s EXIST program and ESG orientation". In this article, we describe how the German government has used programmatic funding mechanisms, namely the EXIST program, in order to incentivize entrepreneurial activity that has broader goals and motivations than just profit and economic performance. Instead, the EXIST program has intentionally and strategically distributed funding and resources to help university entrepreneurship initiatives result in start-ups that are not only financially viable, but also conscious of their environmental and societal responsibilities in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Our findings help provide policymakers with a roadmap on how to use their funding tools and relationships with universities to produce impact entrepreneurship. It responds to a lively recent debate about the benefits and teachability of the scientific approach by showing that entrepreneurs not only can be taught to make decisions using it but also that the use of this approach is associated with superior performance. Across contexts, time, and institutional settings, we find that a relatively short treatment embedded in a training program can lead entrepreneurs to adopt a scientific approach when making decisions and benefit from it 2. Our large-scale investigation reveals novel aspects of the way in which a scientific approach affects outcomes, showing that decision-makers using this approach (1) are more likely to terminate their projects and do so earlier; (2) are more likely to pivot, but do so in a more focused way (few pivots as opposed to none or many); and (3) perform better 3.  It contributes to research in this area with a theoretically based interpretation of the results that provides insights into the mechanisms underlying the effects of the scientific approach. Our framework maintains that the scientific approach operates through two mechanisms. The first, efficient search, has to do with the ability to use theories to identify exploration opportunities and efficiently test them. The second, methodic doubt, has to do with the ability to question ideas. Entrepreneurs adopting the scientific approach are aware that they deal with unknowns and, hence, adopt tighter decision rules This article has shown that the impact of a scientific approach on termination, pivot, and performance is overall robust across different contexts in terms of sign, despite variations in the effect size and precision of the estimates. The investigation of the possible factors contributing to such variations would be very important and insightful, although it would require a research project specifically designed to that purpose. We believe that future research would derive valuable insights from pursuing this line of investigation. Finally, our study has practical implications. It shows that it is possible to teach entrepreneurs to operate like scientists, even within the context of relatively short interventions embedded in business support programs. It also shows that this approach leads to superior performance through a very precise path: better idea selection and focused pivots. In contexts in which these are desirable outcomes, therefore, the application of a scientific approach to entrepreneurial decision-making would be valuable.

New paper in Industrial and Corporate Change by SI Prof Toke Reichstein with Maria Halbinger (INO PhD degree) and Francesca Melillo (INO post doc): "Communities of interest are heralded as hotbeds for entrepreneurship. However, the social identification members of such communities are subject to may be detrimental to their proclivity to pursuing ideas through firm foundation and, thus, their propensity to become entrepreneurs. While other-oriented members tend to be associated with firm foundation, the association is significantly reduced and even negatively associated with firm foundation when the individual strongly identifies with a community of interest with collective values due to a shift in their attention toward community engagement as opposed to firm foundation. This paper draws from field studies, a problem-solving task, and survey data to empirically support our hypotheses. The study highlights the importance of integrating social identification and other-orientation when studying communities of interest in relation to entrepreneurship."

[PDW Call for Abstracts] Race and Entrepreneurship The third annual Academy of Management PDW on race and entrepreneurship provides an opportunity to get feedback from journal editors on extended abstracts. In this professional development workshop, participants explore the topic of entrepreneurship and race. The first workshop (2022) addressed the past, present, and future of research on race and entrepreneurship. The second workshop (2023) addressed the challenges and opportunities in publishing research on race and entrepreneurship. This third workshop will introduce Bourdieu's Practice Theory as a theoretical foundation for studying race and entrepreneurship. After this panel discussion, those in the audience who submitted an abstract will have an opportunity to discuss their project with editors from top entrepreneurship journals. Our ultimate goal for this PDW is to encourage a broad research agenda on race and entrepreneurship that captures both the structural qualities of marginalization and the agentic qualities of entrepreneurship. Invitation to contribute: "Exploring Entrepreneurial Landscapes: Insights from the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) and Panel Study Entrepreneurship Dynamic (PSED) Datasets " This edited volume will be a selection of chapters by diverse academics, scholars, researchers, educators, and experts from a wide range of disciplines, who address different aspects of Global Entrepreneurship Research Based on GEM and/or PSED Datasets. Thus, we seek unpublished and original contributions from eminent experts in entrepreneurship research from around the world. The book targets an academic, professional, and intellectual audience who seek new knowledge of these arenas. Hence, the book intends to cover a wide scope of theories, applications, conceptualizations, formulations, usages, and developments in entrepreneurship research to be used as a reference book. This book will be submitted to Springer for publication. Previous books based on similar call for chapters have been published by Springer in their book series indexed by ISI and/or SCOPUS. All chapters will undergo a full double-blind peer review process (with reviewers selected from inside and outside of the volume contributors), as well as plagiarism check to verify the originality of written work, and the final decision to include any chapter will be dependent on criteria established by the volume editors and Springer.
