On this #GivingTuesday I'm thinking about Philosophy Talk's 2019 episode on with one of its originators, Stanford political scientist Rob Reich, author of "Just Giving: Why Philanthropy Is Failing Democracy and How It Can Do Better." More at https://lnkd.in/drTVHf5x.

Galinda moans "I don't know why you can't just teach history. Instead of searching the past" Dr Dillamond replies "Because we can't run away from the past and ignoring it is dangerous. The past can help explain our present circumstance" So as we reflect on the year gone, a chance to reflect on fundraising history and why it does not benefit us or our causes to ignore it - it helps explain who and where we are. Doing the legacy benchmarking research, I was really surprised by the lack of organisational knowledge about the very recent history of income, stories and promotion of legacies - if we don't know what we have done in the past or how something has performed, how can judge our current performance? By looking at an archive of our fundraising, we learn what has been tried and tested (and hopefully what worked and what didn’t work). Hopefully we connect again to the why and how we want to change the world – maybe we even see how much progress has been made to solve an issue. See this great blog with Jayne Lacny about the importance of archiving and knowing your history https://lnkd.in/eGDpRG4E Explore some fundraising history via the timelines Rogare - The Fundraising Think Tank here: https://lnkd.in/dfSFArk6

Unpopular fact: Faith-based is Evidence-Based. Some businesses are afraid to overlap their #philanthropy with #faith. They say, “If there’s God in the program, we can't be associated. We want to give to evidence-based programs.” But in the book “More God, Less Crime,” renowned criminologist Byron Johnson shows evidence-based research and statistics that all point to one clear fact: Faith-based programs are more effective than their secular counterparts. Whether you believe in God or not isn't the point. But if you are truly evidence-based, you can’t ignore the data: Faith makes a positive impact. And it’s part of the reason why 96% of our residents DON’T reoffend. So if you're an evidence-based leader or organization, let’s chat. Or take a look at JUMPSTART’s 2023 impact report in my Featured Section. >>>What are some other areas where we can bridge the gap between faith-based and evidence-based thinking?

Why do so many church programs fail? It’s not because of a lack of effort—it’s because they often miss the people they’re designed to serve. A “church-centric” mindset creates programs that focus on tradition, convenience, or assumptions about people’s needs. The solution? The 5 Rights Framework: ✅ Right Person: Who are you trying to reach? ✅ Right Message: What truth do they need now? ✅ Right Time: Are they ready to hear it? ✅ Right Way: How can you deliver it effectively? ✅ Right Next Step: What action should they take? By focusing on these five steps, your church can create people-centered programs that inspire growth and transform lives. Want to learn more? Check out my latest blog post for practical insights.

Recently, I was reading the story of the Purloined Letter by Edgar Allan Poe, where a letter is hidden by being left out in the open, making it invisible because it is too obvious. Our minds work in a mysterious ways. For whatever reason, story got me to think of the Streisand effect. If you are interested in what this phenomena is, here is the link:

*Link to my TEDx talk below* In my experience working in the nonprofit space and growing up Black in the Pacific Northwest, I’ve observed that we are often incentivized to embrace narratives about ourselves rooted in deficiency and scarcity. Although our community has achieved countless wins and accomplishments, these stories aren’t highlighted nearly as much as our shortcomings by way of systematic prejudice & discrimination. Our good news rarely makes headlines, and our brilliance doesn’t attract the same funding or visibility for our foundations, nonprofits, and businesses. As a result, these successes are often left out of our shared narrative. This gap has an unintended consequence: we tend to forget the resilience and achievements of our community. Our children are growing up unaware of the legacy and sacrifices their grandparents made to secure the lives they live today. Many of us, as adults, have only a limited understanding of the challenges our great-grandparents overcame to create the opportunities we now enjoy. While there’s much we want to change, it’s essential to remember the strength and brilliance that define us. We’re still here, still thriving, still doing remarkable things. There are greater things that many of us talk ourselves out of doing, because we identify with and internalize half of the truth. It’s on us to break the spell and make new agreements about ourselves and our communities. Agreements based on the whole truth. We are unconditioned and unlimited in our creative capacity. Dwell on that and never forget. https://lnkd.in/gMbKMBWs

The following post marks our 50th on the website, a remarkable number which we would like to briefly reflect upon and celebrate with you all. In little less than two years, we have written and published a wide variety of texts on philosophy, art and culture and have massively enjoyed doing so. We are grateful to all those who contributed to the website through their writings, and to all those who read, share and comment on our texts. It has been a wonderful and inspiring experiment and we hope to keep doing this for a long, long time. Not only do we desire to publish more texts, we also want to keep expanding our community of thinkers, writers and artists who seek to experiment with new and fresh ideas. As always, if this sounds like something that you are interested in, do not hesitate to contact us. We are more than happy to hear your ideas and welcome you to the team. In this vein, we have a small favour to ask you. Running Thought Magicians takes quite some time out of our already busy schedules, and also costs us money. Because of this, we want to ask you for a small donation of whatever you can spare. With this money, we can keep up the website and keep organizing events and initiatives in a way that is sustainable for ourselves and the platform over a longer period of time. It is our ambition to keep doing this on increasingly large scales, and (unfortunately) finances are an inevitable part of that process. We will, of course, make sure that the money we earn from your donation finds its way back to the platform and all our related philosophical endeavours. It goes without saying that we are not in it for the money (we are philosophers after all), but for bringing a little bit more interesting thought into the world. Your contribution, however small or large, would help us massively to keep that project going into the foreseeable future. You can donate at https://lnkd.in/e6CrwnMV With love, The Thought Magicians Team
