Nice post. A new worrisome trend in finance is that some academic researchers are advocating for the use of overparameterized/overfit black-box machine learning algorithms to exploit the so-called double-descent phenomenon. While this approach may work well in physical systems, where the underlying laws are relatively constant, it is dangerous in finance. Economic systems are highly dynamic, and the parameters of the data-generating process are unlikely to remain stable, making overparameterized/overfit black-boxes hazardous to investors. This is how to make (really) bad decisions using data ... Sometimes, it's helpful to explicitly see how to do our job badly in order to learn how to avoid mistakes that does not seem obvious. In his blog post "Using Data Science for Bad Decision-Making: A Case Study," Juan Orduz takes us on a journey to show how using data science practices considered standard by many can lead to bad business decisions. He then shares how to do it well. Bayesian network and frequentist approaches included. 💡 Blog: https://vist.ly/3mm2msj #causality #machinelearning #decisionmaking
