The iGEM TU Delft 2024 team recently completed their work on an exciting project: 𝗡𝗶𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗕𝗟𝗔𝗦𝗧! 🚀🌱 As team NitroBLAST, they set out to address the nitrogen pollution problem in the Netherlands, caused largely by the overuse of nitrogen-rich fertilizers in agriculture. Excess fertilizers go to waste and pose serious environmental and health risks due to leakage into the environment. Their proposed solution is radical: to develop plants that can fix nitrogen directly from the atmosphere, reducing dependency on fertilizers. This can be achieved by introducing nitroplasts, newly discovered organelles capable of nitrogen fixation, into crop plants. Given the complexity of this goal, the team initially focused on unicellular model organisms. By fusing these hosts with nitroplasts, they explored the requirements for successful cooperation between the host and organelle. Following the competition, part of the team will continue the project by focusing on lab research to achieve results they couldn’t reach due to time constraints and ultimately publish their findings. 📚
It has been over a week since the unforgettable experience of the Grand Jamboree 2024, yet we are still filled with a whirlwind of emotions. After nine intense months of hard work, we finally had the opportunity to present our project, NitroBLAST, to thousands of people. We were also privileged to learn alongside numerous teams and startups, each showcasing exceptional talent. We would like to extend our sincere thanks to our supervisors, who guided us through this journey, and to our university for granting us the opportunity to undertake this remarkable experience. Of course, our deepest gratitude goes to all of our sponsors, who turned this dream into a reality. Thanks to their support, we were able to develop our project and were honored with a Silver Medal. This, however, is just the beginning for nitrogen fixation. We look forward to furthering our learning in this promising field as we work to address the nitrogen crisis.
