The vulnerability in the XZ package is another cautionary tale that illustrates why developers need automation to amplify their code management capabilities. The incident happened under the watch of an extremely skilled developer who has been familiar with that application for roughly 16 years. Doing voluntary work mostly by yourself, for that long sucks. Quality can’t be guaranteed. But that is the reality of open-source. Now imagine if something similar would have happened in a popular AI repository. The impact could have been way more severe in a shorter term: python-based, diverse community, wider skill gap among contributors, lower security standards, lots of people ignoring protocols to be early-adopters and deploy that inside their products. I am afraid we will see a lot more of these cases in the coming months. The only way to mitigate that is to automate – let’s allow computers to work for us and amplify our capabilities as developers. #devtools #automation #LLMs
