On Tuesday we attended a ceremony at Greenyard Kings Lyn site to welcome their new dedicated Sunswap reefer. The sun was shining for the occasion putting the solar panels straight to work! We were joined by the Mayor of Kings Lyn and were presented with Greenyard's impressive sustainability journey so far and how the e-reefer will be a major contributor to the next phase. With reducing scope 3 emissions being a priority, our partnership will be critical to enabling that. The reefer will operate moving frozen vegetables between 2 of Greenyard sites, working on a closed loop with minimal variables means electric is a perfect choice. 🚢 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐈𝐧𝐟𝐚𝐦𝐨𝐮𝐬 "𝐆𝐚𝐫𝐛𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐁𝐚𝐫𝐠𝐞" 𝐒𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐝 𝐚 𝐙𝐞𝐫𝐨 𝐖𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞 𝐑𝐞𝐯𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 ♻ 🚢 In 1987, the Mobro "Garbage Barge" made headlines as it floated up and down the eastern seaboard carrying over 3,000 tons of trash, unable to find a place to dump the waste. 📆 After 5 long months of rejections and extensive travels, the waste was returned to NY where its infamous journey began. Eventually, the trash was incinerated in Brooklyn, with the ash buried in a landfill in Islip. 🚨This barge’s journey highlighted America’s waste management crisis and raised awareness about the growing need to rethink how we handle waste. The event sparked the country's initial steps toward waste minimization, further inspiring the recycling movement and laying groundwork for what would become #ZeroWaste initiatives. 🤔 So, how is the US doing today? While we've come a long way with advancements in recycling infrastructure, composting, and awareness of waste reduction, the path to true zero waste is still under construction. 📊 Currently, the US produces more waste per person than nearly any other country. However, growing focus on #CircularEconomy principles, corporate responsibility, and legislation for single-use #plastics shows promise in pushing the needle further. 📉 Did you know? The US still recycles only about 35% of its waste. Imagine how much further we could go if we took bold steps toward waste reduction and #recycling to meet the Zero Waste goal of 90% diversion! Let’s remember the legacy of the "Garbage Barge" by continuing to challenge ourselves to reduce waste, innovate new solutions, and commit to a sustainable future! 🌱 #ZeroWaste #CircularEconomy #ReduceReuseRecycle #GarbageBarge #NewYork #Brooklyn #Trash #WasteReduction

Ever wondered what happens to the gases produced in landfills? Rumpke has been investing in green technology at our regional landfills since 1986. We were one of the first waste and recycling companies to learn how to harness and beneficially reuse gases produced by decomposing garbage. Rumpke’s regional landfills are currently home to seven landfill-gas-to-energy facilities that produce enough energy to power more than 70,000 homes. So, when our customers take their trash to the curb, they can be assured that not only is their trash being responsibly disposed of, but it is being responsibly reused. 🌍💚 #Sustainability #RenewableEnergy

Since Spicer Landfill became a Tyrewise location at the start of September, more than 1100 used tyres have been dropped off. Ka pai Porirua! 👏 That adds up to more than 13 tonnes of used tyres diverted from the landfill and kept out of our streams and harbour. As part of the nationwide product stewardship scheme, these tyres will be sent to different companies where they will gain a new life as playground matting, sportsgrounds or in cement production. Other benefits we’ve seen so far at Spicer Landfill include space freed up that was previously used for stockpiling old tyres, and time that went towards shredding and burying the tyres can now be focused elsewhere. Up to five old tyres can be dropped off at a time at Spicer Landfill free of charge (by the public - no businesses sorry!), so long as the tyres are clean and do not have rims. https://lnkd.in/gspvfzHz

You’ve heard about the “ChemStation Difference,” but do you know how we perform next to our competitors? ChemStation's flagship refillable tanks eliminate the hassle and cost of ordering, handling, receiving, inventorying, and disposal of “throw-away” and/or “returnable” containers. Our system offers greater employee efficiency and safety and better environmental practices, with no drums or totes to dispose of or entrust to others for recycling. It is an overall process improvement. Our philosophy: instead of handling the garbage after the fact, why not eliminate the garbage altogether? See the ChemStation difference for yourself! Access to reliable processing infrastructure remains a primary challenge of operating successfully in the compost industry. While the demand for compost facilities is steadily increasing, the progress on creating this critical infrastructure is slow. Now more than ever, we are seeing a need to invest and support the scaling of industrial facilities, just as we saw a need 13 years ago to develop hauling and logistic capabilities. Across the cities we operate in, we have been intentional about building strong relationships with great processing partners that operate at high standards. In cities where this infrastructure does not exist, we have set out to build it ourselves. We have operated our own 5-acre Class II Compost Facility in Douglas County, Georgia since 2017. Developing this facility included creating a shared language to help community stakeholders and public entities understand the importance of organic recycling infrastructure and support policy and zoning efforts to make #compost infrastructure easier to develop. As more funding opportunities become available, prioritizing scalable processing infrastructure is going to be a critical part of the long term success of food waste diversion programs. Furthermore, there is tremendous opportunity to consider how compost can play a role in building more #circular and #regenerative local systems, and keep resources and meaningful jobs in our communities. 🚛 Imagine 1.55 million trucks lined up along the Earth's equator 👉 Then fill them with e-waste, anything discarded with a plug, cable, or battery. They represent the 62 billion kg of e-waste generated in 2022 alone 🖥 And that isn't peak problem - the quantity of e-waste is expected to rise to 82 billion kg by 2030 📈 Currently, the amount is growing five times faster than formal recycling collection rates since 2010 Today is International #eWasteDay - an initiative from WEEE Forum designed to encourage us to 🔎 𝐑𝐞𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐯𝐞, 𝐑𝐞𝐜𝐲𝐜𝐥𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐑𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐯𝐞! focusing on the forgotten about electronics that people have in their homes and offices, but which contain valuable materials that could gain a new life. Any organisations wishing to address the issue of e-waste and wanting to participate are invited to register here 👉 https://lnkd.in/dZifT6V Or individuals, enter the social media competition to win a 7 days European rail pass 👉 https://lnkd.in/daWVVXz7

WQOW-News 18 18 covers our new research on the city of Eau Claire's model for garbage and recycling pickup. It's unique among Wisconsin cities of its size -- and Eau Claire residents appear to pay more than residents in cities that contract for city-wide services. Shifting to city-provided garbage and recycling service could reduce costs to Eau Claire residents. However, it also could raise new questions, such as how to avoid disrupting services or how to address high capital costs.

Is New York City the composting model for the rest of the country? New York City has just achieved a major milestone: completing the rollout of its citywide curbside compost pickup program. As of October, all five boroughs now make composting as easy as taking out the garbage. This puts the city closer to its goal of achieving its goal of zero waste by 2030. But equally important, New York’s curbside strategy goes beyond waste reduction—it’s also a step toward reducing greenhouse gases, and is centered on resource creation. With a separate bin for compost pickup, New Yorkers are now able to divert food scraps, yard trimmings, and even composting packaging from landfills. By redirecting this waste from landfills to composting facilities, the Big Apple joins the ranks of pioneering cities like San Francisco and Seattle, which have already embraced large-scale composting programs that benefit local agriculture and urban green spaces. To quote the Ministry for the Environment | Manatū mō te Taiao's Te-rautaki-para-Waste-strategy.pdf (environment.govt.nz) "The first step is for central and local government, the waste management sector and others with an interest in circular resource management to build a shared view of what this goal means in practice and chart a path for achieving it" We need a waste strategy working together, that also reduces emissions. #GoCircular
We think we should be a stakeholder to assist Auckland Council in the delivery of their 'Waste Management and Minimisation Plan 2024'. We submitted feedback today. We are already recycling 100's of products, systems and infrastructure within the city; many items that don't fit or are not allowed in your recycling bin at home.
