Egypt and Greece Forge Stronger Maritime Ties with First Joint Committee Meeting
Shipping Arabia, June 6, 2024 — In a landmark event, Egypt and Greece convened the inaugural session of their joint maritime committee, enhancing bilateral ties in maritime transport, ports, and marine tourism. Held at the Maritime Transport Sector headquarters in Cairo, the session was co-chairst by Rear Admiral Reda Ismail, Head of Egypt’s Maritime Transport Sector, and Dr. Evangelos Kyriazopoulos, Secretary General of the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy from Greece.
The meeting drew influential figures from both nations, including leaders of major Greek ports such as Volos, Thessaloniki, and Piraeus, alongside officials from the Hellenic Ports Authority and Coast Guard. The Egyptian delegation featured the heads of Alexandria and Damietta ports and the Deputy Chairman of the Suez Canal Economic Zone Authority, with the Arab Academy for Science, Technology, and Maritime Transport also participating.
The discussions focused on intensifying port cooperation and advancing the roll-on/roll-off (Ro-Ro) passenger and goods line project between Alexandria and Volos. Collaboration in training and certification of seafarers was also a key agenda item, aiming to synchronize maritime academic efforts with the strategic partnership framework between Egypt and the European Union established on March 17.
Further, the sessions explored joint initiatives to promote port cities as prime destinations for yachts and cruises, enhancing their visibility in global tourism circuits. The meeting concluded with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the ports of Alexandria and Volos and the initial approval of a cooperation memorandum involving Egypt, Cyprus, and Greece, set to be formalized at the forthcoming trilateral presidential summit in Cairo.
This pioneering meeting underscores a mutual commitment to strengthening maritime links and fostering economic growth between Egypt and Greece, promising a future of increased collaboration and shared prosperity in the maritime sector.
