Real Empathy: 𝐁𝐞𝐲𝐨𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐁𝐮𝐳𝐳𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐝 🌳🔍 When we say "𝐩𝐮𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐟 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐫'𝐬 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐞𝐬," it's not just a catchy phrase. 👞👟 It means 𝐥𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐚 𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞 before designing solutions. Genuine empathy in product design is about the 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐟 𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐫 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐱𝐭𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐬. 🧠❤️ While empathy has become a buzzword in product and UX design, its true meaning is often misunderstood. 🤔 𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐥 𝐞𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐲 𝐠𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐛𝐞𝐲𝐨𝐧𝐝 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐫𝐨𝐨𝐦 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐮𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬. It requires 𝐝𝐞𝐞𝐩 𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐬' 𝐥𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐬. 🌍👥 Let me share two eye-opening 👀 experiences that transformed my perspective:💡 1. UX Lead Interview at Lollypop Design Studio: 🎨 During my final interview with design leader Anil Reddy, he asked a powerful question: "Can you travel to remote areas, stay in potentially basic accommodations, and frequently move between locations?" 🚗🏠 This question revealed his commitment to 𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐮𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐫 𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 for a rural-focused project. It wasn't just about skills; it was about stepping into the user's world. 🏘️🚗 That reflected the org culture of deep user empathy. This commitment to user-centric design has propelled Lollypop Design Studio to worldwide recognition, proving that 𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐞 𝐞𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐲 𝐠𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐬 𝐚 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐥 𝐞𝐝𝐠𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧. 🏆🌐 2. Shravan Tickoo's Journey Beyond Comfort Zones 🚛: During our latest conversation, he shared an interesting experience. While working on an app for transport, he faced a perplexing challenge: truck drivers were rejecting a new app despite a 30% pay increase offer. 🚛💰 Baffled, he did something radical. He spent two weeks living the trucker life. Bumpy roads, roadside Dhabas, and all. 🛣️☀️ 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐮𝐥𝐭? Living with the drivers for half a month led to insights that no 𝐟𝐨𝐜𝐮𝐬 𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐩 𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐮𝐧𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐝. 🛣️ This firsthand experience helped him identify real challenges and propose solutions that led to skyrocketing growth for the fleet venture. 📈 Have you had experiences that changed your perspective on user understanding? True 𝐞𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐲 𝐢𝐬𝐧'𝐭 𝐛𝐨𝐫𝐧 𝐢𝐧 𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬. 𝐈𝐭'𝐬 𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐢𝐞𝐥𝐝, where the real people we're designing for live, work, and struggle. What do you think about empathy in product design?

Nice insightful article Dharmendra Choudhary (DC), after reading this, first few line of a famous poem written by Mr Naresh Saxena come in to my mind - पुल पार करने से, पुल पार होता है नदी पार नहीं होती नदी पार नहीं होती नदी में धँसे बिना...

Love this post, Dharmendra! 🌟 It’s so true—empathy in design isn’t just about ticking boxes, but genuinely stepping into the user’s world.

Thank you for the mention Dharmendra Choudhary! Empathy today is more often observed in documents than in the real world. I hope all designers practice this, even when there are no design projects.
