2 months ago, I bought chat.com for $10M+. Here's an update. I'm posting this because several folks have noticed that the chat.com domain no longer redirects to my post, and some are speculating that I might be getting ready to launch something big on it. Want to clear up any confusion. I am not launching something big on it. I am not launching anything on it. I have sold the domain name. I have sold it for more than I paid. As promised, I have taken $250k of the gains and donated to Sal Khan and Khan Academy to support their efforts to use A.I. to create personalized education at scale for the world. I passionately believe in Sal, Khan Academy and their mission. BREAKING NEWS: The rumors are true, I bought the domain name chat.com. I am not disclosing the exact price yet, but it's in 8 figures and is the most expensive domain name transaction I've ever been involved with. A few things I'd like to clear up with this post (so I'm not answering 100 DMs and emails from friends, family and colleagues). 1) The domain was purchased personally by me, not my company, HubSpot. 2) We are not planning to rebrand ChatSpot.ai to chat.com. I like the the name and it's been serving us well. (If you haven't signed up for ChatSpot yet, you should. It's free, and it's fun). 3) The reason I bought chat.com is simple: I think Chat-based UX (#ChatUX) is the next big thing in software. Communicating with computers/software through a natural language interface is much more intuitive. This is made possible by Generative A.I. 4) chat.com is absolutely brilliant in terms of simplicity, shortness and being totally *on point* and meeting the moment. It immediately creates user trust. Somebody (not me) will build a massively successful product/company on it. 5) I don't usually sell domain names, but if I make a profit on this one, will make a large donation to Sal Khan and Khan Academy (which I'm a huge fan of). Over the decades, I've learned about the importance and value of domain names. WordPlay.com (my word-game) has hit 150 million games played and 16 million users. Their TED talk was awesome and inspiring. The day I watched it, I had my daughter use ChatGPT as a tutor to try out their examples. She really enjoyed it. The potential is there and it's HUGE.
Love this!! There is so much focus around the potential negative impacts of AI, such as job loss or misinformation—and that is important to discuss and try to mitigate. But AI is happening, and there is also a LOT of good that it can do. Excited to see how much you donate!
