Over the weekend, I had the privilege of meeting Steel Dynamics (STLD) CEO Mark Millett. A branch of SDI, Aluminum Dynamics is currently building a $2.5 billion cold mill plant in Columbus, MS—Mississippi's largest economic investment ever. Steel Dynamics started with just three employees when Mark co-founded the company in 1993. Today, it employs more than 12,000 people. Since 2012, when Mark became CEO, the company's steel shipments have soared 121%—from 5.8 million tons to 12.8 million tons. The net income has skyrocketed more than 3,000%, from $164 million to $1.75 billion, and its average market cap has grown from $3 billion to nearly $21 billion. Imagine. Over dinner, I asked Mark and his wife about how they measure the impact of such remarkable success. Mark's answer—he doesn’t measure success in revenue alone. For him, it’s all about the number of people he’s impacted and the people who’ve supported him along the way. He didn’t just count the 12,000 employees at SDI but also their family members—45,000 people he considers part of the company. Mark also shared his story of growing up in humble beginnings in England. He credited his time in scouting with shaping his future and molding him into the leader he is today. As a Cubmaster in my local community, I felt pride, knowing that my volunteer work is shaping tomorrow’s global leaders. What stood out most to me about Mark is his humility. That humility is what makes him a truly genuine leader. He approached our dinner table at the SDI Christmas party and sat with my husband and me, taking the time to engage in meaningful conversation.
