An exciting milestone happened yesterday: the Southern Ute Tribe celebrated the activation of a high-speed broadband network serving the reservation. So important for digital equity and access. There's one troubling issue that caught my attention in the address from Colorado Broadband Office: the use of the word "progress" and the implication that "tradition" is somehow operating in a different sphere from progress. First of all, the term "progress" is, itself, immensely embedded with White colonialist authorities. That's a huge topic but it's important to point that out. Secondly, let's remember that tradition is most certainly NOT a kind of flipside, opposite, or binary against the values expressed by the word progress. Tradition has always encompassed values of growth, learning, expansion, and engagement in life. While some phrase it as somehow being restrictive, tradition is a source of values and integrity. For many, tradition is a compass that guides good intention and living with respect and balance. We have to be careful that we don't cast it as a barrier to moving forward. Words matter. https://lnkd.in/g648kgkj

From my economic research desk: Very revealing graphic reflecting the(unsustainable) pace of change in Canada's largest cities. Very few U.S. cities have more growth in the 2020s, (purple bar), than prior decades. Most large Canadian cities do. The disruption to urban life this hyper growth represents is tearing at Canada's economic and social fabric. It is simply too disruptive to daily life. Development in this decade reflects projected population in the past. Official projections that have fallen far short of Canada's actual growth. Development, especially in the commercial/office sector will slow dramatically. But the population is continuing to grow, as will the demand for new infrastructure. Governments need to invest in public infrastructure and expand affordable housing urgently, while concurrently taking additional responsible steps to reduce population growth. More initiatives and incentives are needed to expand deployment of modular and 3D construction printed communities. Methods that can be completed in months and at a fraction of costs and labour of traditional builds. Reducing the stock of temporary residents in Canada is crucial too. Additional measures are needed to achieve Immigration Canada's aspirational population reduction target. #housing #population #urbangrowth #canadianpopulation #canadianeconomy #infrastructurecanada

Sunday " " time Visit bucket list #11 Visit Ground Zero in New York City Visiting Ground Zero in New York City is a profoundly emotional experience, offering a chance to honour the lives lost and reflect on the events of September 11, 2001. Located in Lower Manhattan, the site now stands as a testament to both unimaginable tragedy and incredible resilience. It invites visitors from around the world to come together in remembrance and healing. The 9/11 Memorial, with its two vast reflecting pools, is a serene space for quiet reflection. These pools sit where the Twin Towers once stood, and the names of nearly 3,000 victims are engraved in bronze around the edges, each representing a life lost in the attacks or the 1993 World Trade Center bombing. The gentle sound of cascading water adds a sense of peace and solemnity, offering visitors a moment to pause and connect with the memory of those who were taken too soon. Nearby, the 9/11 Museum tells the deeply personal stories of that day. Walking through its exhibits, you’ll encounter artefacts that range from pieces of the fallen towers to items that belonged to the victims and first responders. These objects, along with photographs, videos, and personal accounts, create an intimate and powerful reminder of the human toll, the bravery, and the enduring spirit of unity that emerged in the aftermath. One World Trade Center, also known as the Freedom Tower, stands tall as a symbol of hope and renewal. Visitors can ascend to the top, where the observation deck offers stunning views of the New York City skyline. Standing there, you can feel the strength of a city and a nation that refused to be broken. When you visit Ground Zero, take your time. It’s more than a place to see; it’s a place to feel, to remember, and to reflect on the shared human capacity for compassion, strength, and resilience. Whether you’re visiting for the first time or returning to pay your respects, Ground Zero is a space that invites us all to honour the past while looking toward a future of hope and unity. https://lnkd.in/ebTCCPa #GroundZeroNYC #911Memorial #NeverForget #OneWorldTradeCenter #HonorAndRemember #ResilienceAndHope #WeRemember #EOD #EOKHUB
