Today is International Youth Day. International Youth Day is an opportunity to bring youth issues to the attention of the international community and to celebrate the potential of youth as partners in today’s global society. The Day is also a chance to celebrate young people’s voices, actions, and initiatives, as well as their meaningful, universal, and equitable engagement. This year’s theme for International Youth Day is “From Clicks to Progress: Youth Digital Pathways for Sustainable Development.” This theme highlights the key connection between digitalization and accelerating the progress of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), emphasizing the crucial contributions of young people in this transformative process. Youth have the creativity, the potential and the capacity to make change happen – for themselves, for their communities, and for the rest of the world. Today and every day, York Region CAS is committed to understanding and supporting the important roles that our youth play in our community and works to provide equitable and accessible services to ensure their wellbeing. Highlighted below are initiatives hosted by York Region CAS in support of youth in our communities: Stay in School Awards Public School and Post-Secondary Focus Since 2015, York Region Children’s Aid Society (YRCAS) has hosted the annual Stay in School Awards event in partnership with the Canadian Federation of University Women Aurora-Newmarket chapter. This partnership’s advocacy led to other local service clubs joining in to provide financial donations. In 2021, the York Region Children’s Fund embraced the Stay in School Awards Event as their annual inaugural event. Stay in School Awards – Public School Focus Students in grades 8 – 12 who have had success during their school year receive a certificate of recognition for their achievement and a gift card. The awards are provided during the Stay in School awards ceremony which recognizes the achievements of each youth and encourages them to continue making gains academically. The gift card funds and costs associated with the event (if any) are raised through fundraising efforts by the York Region Children’s Fund. In 2022, 74 awards were given to youth. Stay in School Awards – Post Secondary Focus Students attending College, University, or a Trades Program apply for an annual Stay in School Award. The funds for the awards are raised through fundraising efforts by the York Region Children’s Fund, including annual Award Sponsors (as per above). In 2022, $21,500.00 in awards were provided to 16 Award recipients helping them pay for costs related to their post-secondary or trades/apprentice programs. To support this event, donations can be made at: https://lnkd.in/dWveVnKQ (in the dropdown box choose – Stay in School)

Relying on wealthy, largely white donors for funding can lead nonprofits that work with low-income children of color to feel pressured to skew their priorities. In part because of class and racial differences, nonprofits can have trouble talking effectively with the people they serve while also satisfying donors’ demands. From an in-depth case study of an after-school program: https://buff.ly/3BoelSG #fundraising #donors #philanthropy
Class and race can create divides between donors and a cause they support − putting stress on those nonprofits

While I work on figuring out the operating agreement and overall business dealings for this charity, I’d love to see if anyone is interested in being on the Board of Directors for a 501(c)3 charitable organization. The organization would be based in Michigan-with myself and my wife acting as CEO/Co-Founders/COO and on the Board as well. We would need be seeking a Secretary and a Treasurer at a minimum. We think 6 people is a good number for a board. We do not expect all members of the board to be involved in the games industry, but a 2-3 of the board members should be. The purpose of the organization would be to provide a sustainable place for children of all ages in low income and inner city housing to come and gain an education in the games industry in whichever area interests them the most. Long term goals include securing a building a to provide all areas of education, bring in speakers, mentors and teachers to continue education, develop a day care center that focuses on STEM initiatives and usher children into the industry. Here’s a list of the services aimed to be provided as time goes on: -It would focus on all stages of childhood, through high school. We would partner with the scholarships available to provide additional funding in fields associated, to allow funding for those charities to go even further, doubling the good in the community. -I’d eventually look to bring industry professionals in to mentor, teach, speak, and advise. -I would look to have daycare-focusing on inner-city children means understanding mom and dad can’t afford childcare for the others. These daycares would focus on STEM to encourage development and interest at a young age. -I would look at partnering with the local school districts for after school care as well as potential in school teachings-like Trade Schools. -I would inquire into allowing a membership to allow additional enrollees. Every paid membership pays a membership for another child/family. -This would help encourage development in the industry in the Midwest, and could even set up partnerships/scholarships for college. -We could run a monthly publication, teaching kids how to write articles and build a brand about their writing, and give them experience.

When he started Year 10, Marco was often distracted at school, meaning that he didn’t always pay attention in class, leaving him feeling frustrated and angry. He had given up on himself and his education and had no aspirations or hope for his future. Like Marco, around 30% of children in the UK - 9 in an average school class of 30, or 4.2 million in total - are growing up in poverty, in households earning less than £400 per week, putting them at high risk of having mental health struggles, and five times more likely than their peers to experience poor educational outcomes. Long-term, this leads to a lack of confidence, low aspirations, and ultimately unemployment - with these children being 50% more unlikely to transition into further education, employment or training when leaving school as young people at the age of 18. But it doesn't have to be this way. At City Year UK we’re working tirelessly to ensure that the next generation - our future leaders - are equipped to succeed and thrive in school, employment and life, no matter what their background or circumstances. We do this by placing volunteers, aged 18-25, into schools across Greater Manchester, West Midlands and London to act as Mentors to children who are struggling. These Mentors give the children the support they need to thrive socially, emotionally and academically, while they themselves build the skills, resources and networks needed to pursue a fulfilling future. This year, we are celebrating our 15 year anniversary. And we are doing this with a pledge to reach over 21,500 children and young people by August 2027. But we can’t do this alone. Help us reach more young people and give them the chance to realise their full potential. Please make a donation today and share with your network so that more young people like Marco can look forward to more hopeful futures: cityyear.org.uk/donate Thank you for your support! 🙏🌱🌟 #cityyearuk #educationcharity #cityyear15years

Sheryl Crow says a change would do you good, and I have to agree with her. This season I switched gears and joined forces with Harriet Clewis Kinnett to coach the Chelmsford High School (MA) girls swimming and diving team. I may be a novice to the sport, but all the feels of being part of a fun and competitive program are there! It is truly a joy to get to know these 18 amazing young women and support them as they pursue their goals. And you'd better believe, these girls work hard! Of the many goals we are working towards, there is one that spans beyond the pool and school, and that is collaborating with the Girls Gotta Run Foundation. For those who may not know, GGRF welcomed me in 2019 to conduct my doctoral research. I went to school, lunch, Life Skills training, and practice with the girls. They took me around their Ethiopian town, visiting markets, coffee shops, and their homes. The girls shared that before GGRF, they were always second to their brothers in their families, and that they were often so burdened with chores that they did not have friends outside of siblings and cousins. Most had little hope of attending high school without the support of GGRF. In Ethiopia, it is not uncommon for teenage girls to be matched in marriage with men who are decades older than them. They are often forced to bear children long before they are physically, financially, and emotionally prepared to do so. This all results in a complete stop in formal education and a life of isolation. But this season the Lions have decided to do something about it. Because they know that by empowering one girl, you also empower her family, her friends, and her future. We have set a team goal of raising $1000 this season. Each time we set a season's personal best, a donation will be made to GGRF. $1000 will pay for education, food, training, clothing, and Life Skills programming for one girl. And we're going to reach that goal! I encourage you to make a donation to GGRF's "Go Beyond the Finish Line" campaign as well. $25 provides menstrual pads for 2 Athletic Scholars for the year. $50 funds one month of Self-Defense classes to empower girls against abduction. $100 provides 100 hot lunches - cooked by our Mothers - for school days. $500 funds purchase of a year's school notebooks for 50 girls. https://lnkd.in/eHUH2g7V
