Finally, Evidence That Managing for the Long Term Pays Off Data and AI teams are often faced with the sacred dilemma of ROI. While value creation should indeed be the guiding principle for data, this must be considered in the medium and long term. Data, along with generative and non-generative artificial intelligence, is at the heart of business transformation, their economic models, and also innovation—for example, in design, new materials, chemistry, pharmaceuticals, and commerce, among others. The Harvard Business Review recently published a comparative analytical study by McKinsey, highlighting companies with a long-term vision versus those with a short-term outlook. This highly inspiring study is based on a sample of a large number of medium and large enterprises over a period of more than 10 years. I encourage you to read the full version on McKinsey's website, which I hope will provide CDOs with the insights needed to secure the long-term investments essential for the rapid digital transformation that companies of all sizes and industries are facing. Didier Mamma this is even more true in times where rapid value capture is seen as a high priority KPI for investment decisions. In many professional interactions, we encounter people chasing the quick wins and low-hanging fruits. This is not wrong per se but it must be a first step in a larger strategic value creation and capture strategy designed and shared among stakeholders. It is not about creating rapid value with Gen AI tools, it is about having a roadmap where the deploy phase of Gen AI tools is just the first of three AI and Gen AI-driven transformation phases: reshape and reinvent where the full potential of AI and Gen AI will unfold and lead to a strong competitive advantage and productivity increase. Very well described by BCG.

Very interesting. Its logic to plan investments on long-term if you consider how long it takes to develop it. Very often, we begin in a direction of something and end up with something else. Like swimee. I started to develop a virtual coach and I end up with a sourcing targeting system.
