30 years. It goes by faster than you can ever imagine.
It doesn't seem that long ago that I was delivering the music for Blackthorne (PC) while writing and recording the voice over for the cinematic opening of a new game.
Both were created by a small company called Blizzard. And after my contract was up I made my case to get a full-time job. I wrote an impassioned letter to Allen Adham and Mike Morhaime, telling them I'd do anything they needed at the company to work there. I even cheekily offered to wash Allen's new car once a week (he never made me do it) and promised Mike a Rock Hydra for his Magic: The Gathering deck (which I delivered). I'll never forget the day I they brought me and Allen said, "I don't know if we have enough work to keep you busy, but you get what we're trying to do here."
Allen then asked if I wrote the script for the Warcraft: Orcs and Humans intro they showed at Summer CES. When I confirmed that I had, he said, "Great, because all we really know right now is that the orcs are fighting the humans and the main bad guy's name is Blackhand. Go figure out the rest."
I took a pay cut from working in desktop publishing at Kinko's Copies to work at Blizzard and I also got to put my editing and layout skills to the test by also creating the manual. Looking back, it was an absolutely bonkers way to get started on what has been a career filled with incredible highs and lows. Successes and failures beyond my wildest imaginings. The opportunity to work with incredibly talented creatives from all forms of entertainment.
If you would have told 1994 me what was going to happen over what has become more than a job, more than a career, he would have laughed in disbelief. There are still days when I kind of can't believe everything that's happened, everyone I've met, and everywhere I've been. And here's the craziest part. I'm not done yet. Not if I have anything to say about it.
These past 2 years have been devastating in the games industry. Tens of thousands of people have lost their jobs, dozens (at least) of studios have closed, and it feels like there may not be a turn-around until 2025. I haven't had a paycheck in 15 months and contrary to what you might think, I never got rich while the games I worked on made billions of dollars. And yet, I'm putting all my time, effort, and what money I can into starting a new studio. Because while I sometimes despise this industry, I love games.
I love making them and I love playing them. I love seeing people that play the games I make having fun. And I'll be damned if I'm stopping now.
I hope you'll join me on the next leg of the journey and that we can all keep focused on the things that truly matter. Now, I'm going to take the kiddo to the park, get some sunshine into my soul, and look toward the future.
