This is what happens when you let a tech expert train the end users. True story… My department of around 40 colleagues needed to work with a different CRM system to record and manage prospects and clients. We were called to a training session led by a nice lady who was the ultimate expert in this system. She had worked with this system for years, and knew everything there was to know about it. She was even aware of every bug and workaround. As a trainer she was completely inexperienced, but her expertise would be her lifeline. The room was too small to seat us all, so many stood against the back wall, while the expert told us everything she knew. And that was a lot. It was a monologue of an hour, covering how to create a client record. The core couldn’t be simpler: type in all client information (name, address etc) in the appropriate fields. This could have been a presentation of 10 minutes. Instead, she showered us with everything that could go wrong. Most of the examples were very rare, but she told us anyway. There was no structure in her presentation. The people who took notes stopped writing. At a certain point, we were just uncomfortable, standing or sitting there hearing a lot, but learning little. After the session, that even took much longer than planned because she had so much to tell us, we were left with these conclusions: 😶 what a disastrous system 😣 it’s very complicated 🙄 this will be a time-consuming task In the end, this nice lady remained the helpdesk of the users until forever. The lesson learned from this experience? Never let a tech expert train your end users. Best approach: Let the expert train the real trainer. The trainer leads the end-user training, and the expert is a backup for certain types of questions. In my business, this approach looks like this: The tech/subject matter expert trains me. I create the e-learning program based on effective learning principles. The expert is the main reviewer of the draft e-learning. This is such a simple but effective approach. Do you have experiences like this, where you were trained by a techie?

Results-Based M&E Approach: How is it different from traditional M&E? 📍 What is a Results-Based M&E Approach? A systematic process that analyzes and evaluates program activities, outputs, and outcomes to measure and track program performance. 📍 What is the difference between traditional M&E and results-based M&E? 1) Focus on What’s Done vs. What’s Achieved: Traditional M&E: Looks at what activities are carried out. Results-based M&E: Cares more about what actual outcomes and impacts are achieved. 2) How Success is Judged Traditional M&E: Success is often judged by completing tasks and using resources efficiently. Results-based M&E: Success is measured by whether the intended outcomes and impacts are reached, focusing on how effective and relevant the efforts are. 3) Who’s Involved and How Traditional M&E: Stakeholders might just be involved in collecting data or giving updates. Results-based M&E: Stakeholders are actively involved throughout the project, from setting goals to interpreting results, which builds more accountability and ownership. 4) Learning and Improving Results-based M&E: Is big on learning from mistakes and successes and using that knowledge to make things better. Traditional M&E: Might not put as much emphasis on learning and improvement. 5) Using the Right Metrics Traditional M&E: often uses numbers related to activities and outputs. Results-based M&E: focuses on more meaningful indicators directly linked to outcomes and impacts, giving a clearer picture of progress. My research in Maturity Models as led me to develop a customizable framework to standardize assessments. If you are interested, please read! Statement of the Problem Some organizations variability in assessment methods leads to inconsistent evaluations of individual, and teams' performance and effectiveness. This inconsistency hampers the ability to ensure fair, objective, and comparable assessments across different units which undermines operational effectiveness. Proposed Innovation The Assessment Standardization Maturity Model (ASMM), tailored for training organizations, proposes a structured framework in developing and implementing standardized assessment practices. Current State of the Art and Its Deficiencies Currently, assessment practices are often inconsistent. Different organizations may use varying criteria and methods, leading to disparities in evaluating performance. Existing frameworks lack a comprehensive, data-driven approach tailored to the needs of training and assessment, resulting in inefficiencies and potential gaps in training effectiveness. Barriers to a Solution Several barriers exist to implementing a standardized assessment model, including resistance to change, the need for significant investment in technology and training, and potential data privacy concerns. Achieving consensus on the standardization criteria and ensuring consistent application across various units and exercises can also be challenging. Innovation in the ASMM The ASMM introduces several innovative elements: 1. Visible: The model ensures transparency in assessment criteria and processes, making them visible and understandable to all stakeholders. 2. Accessible: By leveraging digital platforms, assessment tools, and data are easily accessible to instructors and trainees. 3. Understandable: The model includes clear, detailed guidelines and rubrics, ensuring that assessment criteria are easily understandable. 4. Linked: Assessments are linked to training objectives and operational standards, ensuring alignment. 5. Trusted: The use of validated instruments and standardized processes builds trust in the assessment results. 6. Interoperable: The model ensures that assessment systems are interoperable across different units and platforms, facilitating seamless integration. 7. Secure: Robust security measures are implemented to protect assessment data, ensuring confidentiality and integrity. Impact of Efforts The implementation of the ASMM will lead to significant improvements in the quality and consistency of assessments within training organizations. It will ensure that all personnel are evaluated fairly and accurately based on standardized criteria. This consistency will enhance the credibility of training outcomes, making it easier to compare performance across different units. The data-driven approach will enable training professionals to make more informed decisions, leading to better-targeted interventions and improved operational effectiveness.
