Can we bring back “I was wack”? So our 10 year old son came home from sleepaway camp last month “mewing” (aka “selfie face”, “mirror face” - basically sucking your cheeks in to narrow your face) to which Ethan Turner and I were like, “Ohhhh, that’s Blue Steel buddy,” and we ended up watching Zoolander for family movie night to put this internet trend into (relatively) historical context for him. Fellow caregivers will be happy to know that most of this 2001 hit holds up and/or provides for good learning conversation for a fifth grader. And even LinkedIn work metaphors and examples. Thankfully someone on YouTube excerpted this hilariously beautiful scene between Hansel (Owen Wilson) and Derek (Ben Stiller) so I could share it here. I’ve learned throughout my own life, and 20 years of advising leaders, how underrated and powerful apologies, repair, and reconciliation can be. I’ve even helped wordsmith some delicate…stuff, among colleagues, co-founders, and titans of their industries - like these two men. “I was wack” “No I was wack!” Newsflash - I’ve been wack, you’ve been wack, we’ve all been wack! You can’t be a human being that gets to any modicum of success without being a little wacky, from time to time. See what I did there? When we can aspire to our own humanity and to fully honor others’, we may have a chance of figuring all of *this* out after all. I think this is a great post by Stephen Fern This is something I discuss during my 1-1 coaching looking at your ‘wheel of life’ where we identify your strengths and weaknesses… #givingback is part of this and what it gives you, a sense of well-being, rewarding (not financial). We could all give £20 but can you give 20 minutes of your valuable time? Giving back is also one of the NHS England 5 steps to #mentalhealth. I’ve been coaching a billionaire myself and this is very apt…money isn’t everything, it does play a role in your wheel of life as well, but is it your priority? Alongside giving back is HAPPINESS and GIVING BACK can link in with this…may be it provides contentment etc. Worth checking on a scale of 1-10 how much are you giving back? Can you give more as this can be rewarding no matter who you are… Keep strong 💪
