🌐🚗 Did you know that one of the key components of autonomous vehicles is the LiDAR sensor? LiDAR, which stands for Light Detection and Ranging, scans the environment around the vehicle and creates a detailed 3D map. These real-time maps are critical for helping autonomous vehicles navigate safely. To effectively function, they require regular cleaning to remove any dust or dirt. A simple wipe with a clean microfiber cloth can do wonders for detection and accuracy. Keep your autonomous journey smoother and safe! 💡🚀 #AutonomousVehicles#TechTip#LiDAR#FutureTech 🖥️🧩
🚗 New Developments in LiDAR Technology for Autonomous Driving
📝 I´m happy to share my latest article published in Photonics Spectra magazine, exploring the cutting-edge advancements in LiDAR technologies!
LiDAR sensors are crucial for the progress of autonomous driving. As the automotive LiDAR market is predicted to double in the next two years, the significance of these technologies is more pronounced than ever. However, challenges remain in terms of size, weight, and power consumption, driving the need for more compact, efficient, and seamlessly integrated LiDAR systems.
In the article, I delve into how safety concerns in the automotive sector are spurring the evolution of high-performance LiDAR systems. These improvements are essential for advanced driver-assistance systems and fully autonomous vehicles. The future of LiDAR involves not just enhancing functionality but also integrating these systems into the vehicle's body—think bumpers and grilles—to streamline design and boost performance.

Without this technology, Baidu, Inc. couldn't have launched 1000 robotaxis simultaneously. 🤯
This sensor tech is only making autonomous cars a reality.

I previously shared my work using a custom YOLOv8 model for object detection on KITTI and Nuscenes datasets with LiDAR data projected onto a bird's-eye view (BEV).
Now, I have trained a custom Yolov8 model for front camera images and have done the visualizations of both the camera and LiDAR BEV model outputs! This allows for a fascinating comparison of how each sensor "sees" the environment. This can also help autonomous vehicles get a 3D view of the environment.
This combined visualization is a great step towards achieving my goal of using weighted fusion for the final results.

I'm thrilled to share a glimpse of my latest project: developing a fully autonomous car that not only maintains lane integrity but also incorporates advanced braking functionalities. This model leverages both radar and LiDAR technologies to ensure unparalleled safety and efficiency, even in challenging weather conditions.
🔹 Radar Technology: By using millimeter-wave frequencies, the radar system can accurately detect distances and speeds of objects, proving invaluable in rain, fog, or snow.
🔹 LiDAR System: Operating 24/7, our LiDAR system emits millions of laser pulses every second, capturing precise measurements by tracking the time it takes for each pulse to bounce back from surfaces.
Unlike typical driver-assist technologies that still require human oversight, my model achieves true autonomy. Passengers can sit back and enjoy the journey without needing to know how to drive, confident that they will reach their destination safely and efficiently.
🎥 Check out the video below for a sneak peek at the technology in action!
This innovation surpasses current autonomous vehicles on the market, offering a fully autonomous experience from pickup to destination. Join me on this revolutionary journey as I redefine what it means to travel independently.

Have a huge respect for you Peter Soetens, but I agree with Michael DeKort.
Peter is of the opinion that vision-only, i.e., just cameras will help in autonomous driving, arguing that we humans are doing a fine job with just eyes.
But, do we just perceive with eyes? Come to think of it, we first hear at infants! Hearing is a part of environment perception. Some of us maybe impaired, but none us will choose it. Then again, autonomous system, which are supposed to be equal to humans are being argued to be one.
Holistic view of an autonomous system is not to be constrained just by sensor type. It's a 3D world, where a robot is supposed to autonomously traverse (accelerate-deaccelerate, steer) in a 4D world(3D space + time).
Even when the processing time of generating a 3D snapshot from multiple-frames of a camera will become equal to that of LiDAR or RADAR, it will still not be enough to promote vision-only sensors, "yet".
Problem in perception in a single scenario may not just result in a single individual accident, but large scale accidents globally.
There is a lot of innovations coming up, either in AI or sensor fusion. Its good to discuss either personally in workshops or private chats groups. Looking forward to it.

Is anyone believing that when cameras don't perform, you can still drive IF the vehicle has LiDAR/Radar? I don't, I think the argument is moot. When weather blocks the camera, any autonomous car must stop. Not so for LiDAR. If the LiDAR stops working, the camera can pick up any signal present in the environment and driving can continue.
One could argue that LiDAR adds an extra safety layer (3D vision to detect persons/cars/obstacles). Fair enough.
But there's many ways to perform 3D vision, also with (moving) multiple cameras, just like we do when we drive.
I think the whole irony is that it is blatantly obvious that vision-only driving has worked for 100 years for millions of people. LiDAR based driving is just not a thing that exists on public roads.
"Only fools use vision-only".. yeah we all are ! :-)
