It’s Road Safety Week. 🚗🦺 Every day, five people lose their lives on UK roads, and 80 others are injured. Safer cities mean safer communities. Everyone has a role to play in road safety. We are committed to collaborating with local authorities and partners to improve road safety by creating resilient city infrastructure. This involves road maintenance, smart cities, ITS, impact analysis, transport planning, and more. We’ve supported projects like the Tay Road Bridge and Stirling Council through traffic monitoring solutions that help to understand and manage risks. You can read more about how we’re helping to enhance road, pedestrian, and cyclist safety here: https://lnkd.in/e8jPGGAu. We believe technology can make cities smarter and safer by showing how spaces are truly used. Our LiDAR-based solutions are GDPR-compliant, highly accurate, and designed to help identify and manage risks. If your organisation is interested in collaborating on smarter, safer spaces, let’s talk: enquiries@digiflec.com. #RoadSafetyWeek Brake, the road safety charity

On Saturday, members of the coalition met with other advocates and groups to review the Wîhkwêntôwin Neighbourhood Renewal designs and discuss how we can advocate for better. This included a bike tour of the neighbourhood to review the designs while being at the location. The last location we went to was Ezio Farone Park. While we were applauding the closure of the access from the neighbourhood onto the highlevel bridge, a cyclist was struck by a driver. Thankfully, it seems like the cyclist will survive. We are hoping they have a fast recovery. However, this avoidable incident highlights the need for safe infrastructure in our communities. City of Edmonton has highlighted several goals that they intend to achieve by 2050. Among those goals is #VisionZero and a desire for 50% modal share by non-care trips. As a society we cannot achieve these goals until we put the lives & safety of those outside of vehicles above the convenience of drivers. "A driver might get mad" is not an acceptable reason to design infrastructure that endangers the lives of pedestrians, cyclists, or others. Join us is giving feedback to the project team on the Wîhkwêntôwin Neighbourhood Renewal project. The survey is available here: https://lnkd.in/ev4fbBYi and there will be in-person meetings on July 11 & 17 (details at the link above).

8km of new highway is set to transform the New England town of Singleton as around 15,000 vehicles per day are removed from the town’s streets. The New England Highway Singleton Bypass will reduce the number of heavy and oversized vehicles within the town, bypass five sets of traffic lights, ease congestion and improve safety for all road users. With interactive mapping and detailed project information, our portal https://lnkd.in/gjvCm5mZ showcases the numerous benefits that the project will bring to the region and the state’s highway network. Recent portal updates for Transport for NSW have allowed the community to quickly understand the outcomes and project modifications from the Review of Environmental Factors (REF). New mapping layers and supporting documentation provide easy-to-understand and easy-to-use information to support community engagement. One of our favourite elements of this portal is the before-and-after sliders, which show exactly how key aspects of the proposed project will interface with existing assets. This enables users to understand exactly how the project will impact the local environment. Added to that is a spectacular fly-through video that takes users through the entirety of the Singleton Bypass.

I am big supporter of implementing multiple measures to reduce traffic accidents, especially for cyclists and pedestrians, who are too often victims of reckless and distracted drivers. The plan to lower the speed limit from 30 mph to 25 mph citywide could significantly help in reducing the over 115 traffic related deaths in 2023 across the city of Chicago. "Vision Zero" - the goal of eliminating pedestrian and cyclist fatalities on the road to zero - is an ambitious but important one that requires many different policy changes and infrastructure investments. This proposed speed limit reduction is an important element to achieve "Vision Zero".
Lowering city speed limit to 25 mph gets committee OK — but final Council vote slowed down
