Helmholtz delegation visits South Korea A #delegation from the Helmholtz-Gemeinschaft, led by President Otmar Wiestler, visited South East Asia. The aim of the trip was to initiate #collaborations and to gain detailed insights into the region’s research landscape. After #Singapore, the second stop of the trip was South Korea. The country is considered one of the most technologically advanced in the world, investing five percent of its gross domestic product in #research and #development. From 2025, South Korea will also join the group of countries associated with #Horizon #Europe, the EU’s research and innovation program. This opens the door to expanding existing collaborations in a number of ways. Reflections on the EOSC Symposium 2024 in Berlin: A convergence of minds and momentum: The EOSC Symposium 2024 in Berlin was an absolute highlight of the year! 🌟 With 460 participants on-site and almost the double online, we had the amazing opportunity to exchange ideas, collaborate, and dive deep into the future of open science. The conversations around the EOSC Federation and the critical role of the EOSC EU node were particularly exciting, showing just how much momentum we're gaining in building a truly connected research infrastructure across Europe. For me, it was such a pleasure to see so many familiar faces 😊—reconnecting with colleagues and friends and meeting new ones. The sense of community within the EOSC space is growing stronger each year. We discussed at length the sustainability of our projects, which is now more vital than ever. Ensuring EOSC's long-term viability is key, and I could feel the commitment and passion from everyone involved to make it a reality. 🚀 The collaboration between Member States, institutions, and individuals is what truly powers this initiative. Every session was buzzing with energy ⚡, and the corridor chats were filled with brilliant ideas, innovative solutions, and shared visions of the future. I’m leaving Berlin feeling more inspired than ever by the progress we’ve made and the exciting possibilities ahead. 💡 This symposium was more than just a meeting—it was a true testament to the dedication of the entire EOSC community. UNDERSTANDING STRATEGIES OF TWO EUROPEAN RTO’s. If your photonics company (large or small) does business with either TNO or imec, then this 45 minute panel discussion on the first day of the Optica Global Economics Forum in Malaga will definitely interest you. Both are large Research and Technology organisations in the Netherlands and Belgium respectively. Moderator Jim Kafka, president-elect of Optica, moderated a discussion with Tjark Tjin-A-Tsoi, CEO of TNO, and Luc Van den hove, CEO of imec, focusing on the transition from research to commercialization. Tjark highlighted TNO's diversified portfolio and the need for them to focus on improving market impact. Luc emphasized imec's customer-centric approach, adjusting technology readiness levels (TRL) based on individual partnerships. Both stressed the importance of long-term partnerships, global collaboration, and strategic interdependence. Duplication of effort wastes valuable, expensive resources. They discussed the challenges of attracting and retaining talent, emphasizing brand reputation and meaningful work. The conversation also gathered differing approaches to the value of roadmaps, the impact of globalization and current instabilities, and the balance between public and private sector interests in technology transfer.
