A family of primitive asteroids is providing astronomers with a window into the past as they seek to unravel the history of these small space rocks believed to have once brought water to Earth. Life in the solar system can be dangerous, with lots of impacts having taken place over the course of history — for instance, consider the giant impact that formed our moon or the many impacts that spurred the cratered surface of Mercury. On occasion, large asteroids in the main asteroid belt, located between Mars and Jupiter, were also struck. When that happened, those asteroids would shatter into smaller pieces. Events like these can spawn several dozen smaller space rocks; naturally, many resulting bits hailing from the same original object have some things in common like moving around on similar orbits. Astronomers call such groups of asteroids "families."🪨💧 - - - #earth #Space #spaceze #nasa #spaceship #spacex #spacestation #universe #astronomy #astronaut #stars #spaceshuttle #explore

Crazy Watermelon in Space Binary asteroids, essentially miniature replicas of the Earth-moon system, are abundant in our cosmic neighborhood. These include the Didymos-Dimorphos team that led NASA's 2022 Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) mission. Previous study shows that such binary asteroids originate when a rubble-pile "parent" asteroid—composed of loosely held rocks—spins so quickly that it sheds some of its mass, merging into the second, smaller satellite or "moonlet" asteroid. https://lnkd.in/gnEGyDzi

The three asteroids that approached Earth on October 13, 2024, were relatively small and did not pose any significant threat. Here's what you should know about them: 1. Asteroid 2024 TD: * Size: Approximately 16-36 feet (5-11 meters) in diameter. * Closest Approach: Passed Earth at a distance of about 3.2 million miles (5.2 million kilometers). * Significance: While it was classified as a "close approach," it was still a safe distance from our planet. 2. Asteroid 2024 TP: * Size: Estimated to be around 16-36 feet (5-11 meters) in diameter. * Closest Approach: Passed Earth at a distance of approximately 3.7 million miles (6 million kilometers). * Significance: Similar to 2024 TD, it was a safe distance and did not pose any threat. 3. Asteroid 2024 TV: * Size: Estimated to be around 16-36 feet (5-11 meters) in diameter. * Closest Approach: Passed Earth at a distance of approximately 3.7 million miles (6 million kilometers). * Significance: Like the other two asteroids, it was a safe distance and did not pose any threat. Importance of Asteroid Tracking: While these particular asteroids were not a cause for concern, it's important to monitor near-Earth objects (NEOs) to identify and track any potential threats. NASA and other space agencies constantly monitor the sky for NEOs and assess their potential impact risk.
