🛡️ The Cyber Resilience Act enters into force today! This first ever EU legislation of its kind places mandatory cybersecurity requirements for products with digital elements to better protect consumers and businesses. The Act improves level of cybersecurity of all hardware and software, ranging from baby monitors, smart watches to firewalls and routers. This is a crucial step in the fight against the growing threat from cyber criminals and other malicious actors. It also ensures stronger responsibilities on manufactures to implement cybersecurity measures across the entire lifecycle of the product, from design and development, to after the product is placed on the market. Additionally, the new EU cybersecurity rules include new obligations on manufacturers to provide software updates to fix security vulnerabilities and offer security support to consumers. 2dMost companies provide security patches, but they are not always timely and many are not automated, requiring manual effort (often unbeknownst to consumers and businesses). Timely security patching is, upon discovery or notification of a security flaw in a system or product, the release of a security update within a reasonable time that patches and updates the security of a system—sometimes this is automatic, sometimes the security patch is merely a notification that you can and should patch your own system. A contributing factor to this is that there is no legal obligation to provide security support, let alone timely security support. This means that there was no legal requirement to patch known security vulnerabilities and bugs or issue automatic updates.
