AVATAR ECONOMY: THE DISRUPTION OF EVERYTHING AND HOW TO ENABLE THE IMPOSSIBLE METAVERSE FASHION MAGAZINE by Costantino Roselli ⛄ Welcome to the Avatar Economy. The Avatar Economy answers the question: How can unique products be created, offering unimaginable experiences, through a sustainable business process? Additionally, the Avatar Economy serves as the ultimate solution for sustainability. In our case study (Gabby), we achieved a sustainable process percentage of 97%, which remained consistent throughout the entire business process, from initial design to customer delivery. Other sustainability solutions fall short of reaching this percentage and cannot offer holistic solutions. Furthermore, the Avatar Economy ensures 100% inclusivity, as a diverse team from around the world collaborates under a network to produce everything without necessarily knowing each other. The value they share is the only measure everyone is looking for. The Avatar Economy is based on avatar lifestyle. For the first time in human history, we have built a business model where humans are in the secondary market while their avatars occupy the primary one. Avatars are not merely our digital twins. Each avatar represents a personality stemming from an individual or team, interacting with others in what we call the Netizens World, a Metaverse space. The ability to create multiple personalities, hence avatars, across various Metaverses creates an infinitely expanding market where business opportunities, sustainability, and inclusivity are foundational. 🔌 Why did the Metaverse failed? One of the significant issues with the Metaverse is the confusion between it and Meta, formerly Facebook. This confusion is understandable, as Mark Zuckerberg's famous keynote popularized the term "the Metaverse" among those unfamiliar with it. When the Metaverse became a buzzword, every company started moving in that direction without fully understanding it. They believed it was another marketing tool to sell their current products to their existing audience or an opportunity to reach a new audience (Gen Z). However, they failed to provide satisfactory answers to their current audience's question: "Why bother?" Their storytelling lacked depth, and they remained ignorant about the Metaverse. For the new audience, it was a disaster, as they attempted to sell as new what had been played with for over 20 years. The Metaverse is a realm of avatars, not people. It is a space where physical constraints do not apply, which is what makes it special. Comparing it to a tool is insufficient; it should be likened to a revolutionary force, akin to the industrial revolution. D&G, VALENTINO, THE MET RAMP UP WEB3 ROADMAPS 🏸 The Metropolitan Museum of Art “reawakens” garments using AI and holograms, Valentino launches virtual try-on for handbags, and D&G unveils an AR-powered makeup station. While all eyes were glued to the Met Gala this week, the event’s accompanying Costume Institute exhibition quietly introduced emerging tech into its experiential playbook. Open to the public from May 10, the “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion” installation invites visitors not only to see the clothes on display but also to smell, hear, and speak to their original wearers. How? Using artificial intelligence, obviously. Light projections, 3D renderings, and Proto holograms have also been used to digitize designs that have lain dormant for centuries, created in partnership with fashion publication SHOWstudio and auction house Christie’s. Meanwhile, The Metropolitan Museum of Art teamed up with Roblox on its “Replica” project, which allowed players to try on various art-inspired wearables, including Van Gogh’s straw hat from the painting Self-Portrait with a Straw Hat. Though Web3 tech was primarily used for entertainment purposes during its beta phase, the industry is entering a new era — one where Web3 can be tapped for educational and informational experiences too. Meta Bites WANNA | 3D & AR Experiences, a FARFETCH-owned AR company, is fleshing out its new virtual try-on service for handbags. On May 6, the platform launched an interactive feature for Valentino’s Garavani Vsling bag in partnership with the maison. This collaboration marks the first time a luxury brand has integrated the VTO technology for handbags onto its official website. Users can try on five different colors of the bag using their smartphones’ front and rear cameras. DOLCE&GABBANA has teamed up with augmented reality spearheaders FFFACE.ME to bring the house’s beauty products to the virtual realm. Two years after bringing its beauty line in-house, the label marketed its new collection to shoppers via Ffface.me’s AR makeup stations. Ffface.me has previously partnered with Mugler and Prada Beauty to promote their new products. Premium outerwear label Templa will release a 500-piece capsule collection of NFC-connected snow boots in partnership with phygital label Another-1 on May 13. As part of the “Unworld” footwear drop, an NFC chip is embedded into each boot. With the decline of NFTs and the feeling that AI has technologically supplanted the metaverse in terms of mainstream mind-share, the question arises: is digital fashion still in fashion? Vogue checks in with some heavy hitters in the space; here are some of their top-level thoughts: Leanne Elliott-Young, CEO and co-founder of the Institute of Digital Fashion: “The beauty of a digital asset is in its endless possibilities — both in the hands of the creative as well as the audience [...] It’s always been within gaming and now we see physical and luxury fashion stepping into that space.” Mason Rothschild, founder of digital creative agency Gasoline: “I think there’s a path forward for digital fashion when it comes to verification of authenticity and for building community. There’s massive potential in being able to verify who owns your product.” Alice Delahunt, founder and CEO of digital fashion platform SYKY: “In 2023, Roblox had 165 billion avatar updates, and there were 1.6 billion digital fashion items and accessories bought, which is phenomenal. When wondering about the future of digital fashion, I would advise anyone to strip away the noise and look at the underlying facts. Digital fashion is an inevitable part of the future.” Kenneth Loo, co-founder of communications agency Chapter 2: “Though we have yet to see a breakthrough moment or mass consumer adoption, there will be the dawn of what is being dubbed ‘social reality’ where our avatars will soon be living better lives than we are.” Isabel Martinez aka Isabelita Virtual, creative director: “Digital fashion is part of a larger ecosystem. We cannot think of it as a trend but as a long-term construction. [...] Brands have a great opportunity to think out of the box. The challenge is to go beyond the limits we face in real life, where the most evident way to express your identity is through clothing.” For my part, I really agree with the quotes from Alice Delahunt and Leanne Elliot-Young. Retro-futurism 🤖 Retro-futurism can be defined as predicting the future from the past. The most popular example is probably the film 'Back to the Future'. Retro-futurist designs adopt a new aesthetic by drawing on the foundations of the past and escaping into the future, in a sense, thanks to the Metaverse and the rise of artificial intelligence, which has been dominant since the early 2020s. Retro-futurism first manifested itself in books and films. In 1884, George Orwell, Jules Verne, films like Spaceman, Frankenstein, Blade Runner, The Matrix, we came across elements of retro-futurism. Today, it has become a new design and fashion trend for those who miss the comfort and nostalgia of the past. Of course, there is a reference to a freer environment and happier people of the past. Combining nostalgic elements with cutting-edge design techniques is what Retro Futurism is all about. Retro-futuristic illustrations, designs, books or films show the world of the future as seen by people from the past. Beyond these virtual spaces, many fashion houses are incorporating wearable technology into clothing. They are also looking at technological advances in fabrics, such as leather substitutes made from olive leaves. There is also some movement towards an alternative fashion system that prioritises slow production and a return to community as the key to a thriving industry and, more importantly, planet.
