Military health leaders affirmed during the Warfighter and Family Forum that, despite the rise of innovative digital tools like artificial intelligence and telemedicine, the essence of healthcare lies in human connection and compassion. Ultimately, it's the dedicated professionals who provide the empathy, trust, and understanding that technology can never replace! How do you think the balance between technology and human connection in healthcare can be optimized to better serve military personnel and their families? #DigitalInnovators https://lnkd.in/gnKjQgrM

According to Military Times, the joint U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs/United States Department of Defense medical site has launched a new health records system, improving patient care and coordination between the two organizations. The Captain James A. Lovell Federal Health Care Center in Illinois is the final Defense Department medical site to adopt the new electronic health records system, while also being the first Veterans Affairs site to do so in 21 months. Despite initial concerns about staff training and system readiness, the deployment is now up and running smoothly. Approximately 75,000 veterans, service members, and their families will benefit from the integration of VA and DOD health records, enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of healthcare delivery. Coordinating care across multiple sites will be streamlined, providing valuable insights for future software deployments. While some VA patients in the North Chicago region who utilize multiple healthcare sites may temporarily have two sets of medical records, authorities are closely monitoring this issue and making necessary adjustments to ensure a seamless experience for patients. This successful launch demonstrates the commitment of both VA and DOD to improving the quality of healthcare for our veterans and service members. Let's continue to support and prioritize the health and well-being of those who have served our country. #HealthcareInnovation #VeteransHealth #MilitaryCare #JointVAandDOD #ElectronicHealthRecords

Where were you in your career in the late 90s? I was a midshipman at the US Naval Academy - around the same time the top current EHRs were first released. As a veteran, I support Joseph Chenelly's call to Congress for the VA to leave behind their "outdated EHR". But with what? EpicCare launched in 1992, and Cerner Millennium came out in 1997, the same year Vista/CPRS was released. How is that progress? We need a fresh approach to EHRs — one that recognizes healthcare occurs on a spectrum, not along a binary care pathway. Let’s forge solutions that are versatile—powerful enough for hospitals, lightweight for front-line care, accessible through a digital front door with patient-generated health data seamlessly integrated. It’s time to focus less on which system is deployed and more on what it can actually do! #EpicCare #VISTA #CPRS #CernerMillennium #ModernEHR #VAEHRM #OracleHealth #EHR #HealthData #LMI #patientgeneratedhealthdata

This week, MediRecords had the honour of attending the International Committee of Military Medicine (ICMM) event. Our Founder and CEO, Matthew Galetto, had the opportunity to share key learnings from our experience at MediRecords in deploying a Commercial-Off-The-Shelf (COTS) electronic health record for Defence healthcare. He shared valuable insights into what we’ve learned along the way: Adopt vs. Adapt: Adopting a COTS solution gets you up and running faster. Customising can slow you down and lead to higher costs—not to mention you might miss out on future updates. Know Your Users: Defence clinicians want something familiar and easy to use. Cloud-based solutions let them work from anywhere with minimal training, which helps drive adoption. Primary Care is Key: The GP is at the heart of a patient’s care, managing everything from chronic conditions to specialist referrals. A system that supports this role is essential. Mental Health Matters: With the growing focus on mental health, it’s vital to have a system that integrates primary, allied, and mental health care, ensuring continuity and safety. Readiness Through Rehabilitation: Keeping personnel fit for deployment means managing everything from injury rehab to vaccinations. Flexibility is key to supporting workforce health initiatives. Engaging the Patient: A good COTS platform makes it easy to keep service members engaged in their care, through personalised treatment plans, reminders, and alerts. Data Sharing: A system that supports seamless data sharing is critical for informed decision-making and keeping everyone on the same page, from enlistment to discharge. Matthew said, “COTS solutions are the way forward for Defence healthcare, providing agile, connected systems without the need for expensive custom builds. A big shout out to the ICMM organisers for providing the opportunity to share these lessons and join the conversation about the future of military healthcare.” #DefenceHealthcare #COTS #DigitalHealth #MilitaryMedicine #PrimaryCare #ICMM2024
