This is an insightful and timely article. According to a recent analysis published by Cruchbase, based on data through May 2024, the amount of capital raised through Series A funding for biotechs is expected to rise above last year's total, but fewer companies are actually receiving the investments. The projected # of biotechs receiving Series A for FY2024 is projected to be ~20% lower than 2023 and ~40% lower than 2019 / 2020. With fewer companies receiving larger amounts of capital, there is a significant funding gap and a tremendous opportunity for organizations, like Blackbird Laboratories and the others mentioned in this article, to identify promising research, leverage their technical expertise to de-risk early development pitfalls and to accelerate the development of novel and valuable medicines. #Innovation #Entrepreneurship #Biotech

Are you a current or past American Cancer Society grantee? #DYK We’ve supported approximately 24,000 researchers across more than 1,400 institutions, helping to bring many new treatments, diagnostics, and interventions from the bench to the bedside. However, for every innovation that ACS-funded researchers have brought to market, countless others have fallen into the so-called “Valley of Death”, the gap between when basic research funding ends but investors are not yet ready to accept the risk of investing in the new technology or startup. Through the newly launched Collaborative Learning Community (CLC), the ACS Extramural Discovery Science team, together with the American Cancer Society’s venture capital arm BrightEdge, are helping researchers tackle this challenge head on by providing entrepreneurship-focused programming for scientists that have received grant funding from ACS. It was an honor to be featured in Näringsliv life science and to share Gynius Plus AB’s exciting journey. In 2024, we took a significant step forward by transitioning from being a single-device manufacturer to a comprehensive solution provider. Our breakthrough, the #Gynocular, the world’s first mobile and user-friendly colposcope, has been pivotal in improving women's health, particularly in low- to middle-income countries where access to cervical cancer screening is limited. Our mission has always been to make early detection of HPV and cervical cancer accessible, affordable, and effective. With the development of advanced HPV DNA testing methods, we can now process up to 4,000 samples a day using room-temperature storage, eliminating the need for costly, temperature-controlled facilities. This innovation, combined with our partnerships with non-profit organizations, is helping reduce cervical cancer mortality in regions like Africa, South America, and parts of Asia. At Gynius we are not only focused on detecting and diagnosing cervical cancer but also on predicting its future development, ensuring timely treatment and preventing further complications. Academic research doesn’t happen in a vacuum! Pan-regional, multidisciplinary collaborations hold huge potential for tackling health challenges. As part of The Connectivity Mix insight paper and event series, we will be discussing how to use a network approach to turn research at the interface between medicine and technology into reality.  To ensure successful translation into real-world impact, engagement with key stakeholders is essential. As Colin Watts commented at Connect: Health Tech – Live! last year: “If you’re developing technologies, you need an end-to-end pipeline with early engagement of end-users to ensure that they are actually used.” Colin is Chair of the Brain Cancer Programme at the University of Birmingham and a Clinical Lead in the EPSRC Interdisciplinary Research Collaboration (IRC) in Targeted Delivery for Hard-to-Treat Cancers. This national collaboration takes researchers from different disciplines and seeks to increase the efficacy of existing drugs and open the door for new therapeutic agents. The Interdisciplinary Research Collaboration includes regions from around the country and actively involves clinicians in the research process. We laid the foundations for a larger project aimed at visualizing and analyzing publicly available omics datasets in the immuno-oncology field. These tools will enable researchers to easily access and organize relevant data, contributing to biomarker discovery and translational research."
