This is probably one of the most extraordinary labs you’ve ever heard of. While most labs are filled with flasks, test tubes, and microscopes, the FloWave Ocean Energy Research Facility at the University of Edinburgh takes a completely different approach. It features an 82 ft-wide circular wave pool surrounded by 168 automated paddles. These paddles mimic ocean-like conditions, replicating wave speeds, shapes, and even a massive 90 ft vertical spike wave. This cutting-edge facility is revolutionizing the offshore energy industry, testing turbines, oil rigs, and other equipment against the ocean’s toughest challenges—all without ever leaving dry land. Although I’m in love with the sun and the beach, this facility almost made me rethink my ideology:) This lab is a powerhouse of ideas, bringing together science, engineering, and sustainability to tackle real-world problems. And honestly, that’s exactly what our world needs. FloWave Ocean Energy Research Facility | DLVS consultancy ltd Thomas Davey | Callum Guy | Martyn Lennon | Shaun Fraser
