Your Client is Not My Client! I’m not quite sure if local agencies truly understand this simple yet crucial logic. As someone who transitioned from being a freelancer to an independent contractor to a startup founder, I’ve had the opportunity to take on countless projects from agencies. This comes with amazing perks like getting to expand your portfolio by working on ongoing projects while learning a lot in the process. However, when it comes to discussing fees, agencies often fail to communicate clearly. The common workflow these days involves agencies securing a project, allocating resources, and, when necessary, outsourcing to a consultant or freelancer. While this approach is practical, many agencies focus too heavily on the "free" in freelance. They unreasonably expect outsourced talent to meet strict timing, delivery, and quality demands, often overlooking an essential part of the equation: fair payment terms. What’s worse is the unspoken agreement some agencies operate under: “We can only pay you when our client pays us.” The sheer ridiculousness of this expectation is astonishing. It puts the outsourced talent at significant financial risk, regardless of whether they’ve delivered the work as agreed. Your client is not MY client. You are! Moral of the story: Fees and payment terms must be discussed clearly and upfront. Failing to do so not only risks exhausting and exploiting outsourced talent but also reduces them to a temporary resource with no guarantee of fair compensation as if they asked to be an unpaid employee.
