Not many people using the underground walkway at Dulles International Airport - IAD have the time to absorb the exhibit showcasing the airport’s history. Of all the historical photos on display, this one is my favorite; it shows a young JFK, along with his predecessor President Eisenhower, at the inauguration of the airport in November 1962 (almost 62 years to the day of this post!) The photographer seems to have clicked right after a joke was cracked based on the facial expressions; one can imagine a sense of pride and optimism at the dedication of this building, functional infrastructure and beautiful architecture at the same time. This to me is “civility in politics”, something that seems to be increasingly difficult to observe in today’s world. Imagine if JFK had stopped the construction of the airport because he didn’t like the design (particularly the mobile lounges? 😉) Or if he chose to not invite Eisenhower? Or insisted the airport be named not after Eisenhower’s secretary of state but rather himself? This doesn’t mean there were no ideological differences between the two individuals, or their parties; but those were set aside when it came time to delivering something of benefit to the public. The limelight is not on either person, but rather the building that unites them; they understand that it will outlast them both. A small reminder as the current and future President meet today to begin (yet another) transition of power in the nation’s history, as another (much bigger) transition looms in the background

PORT AUTHORITY UNVEILS PLANS TO REIMAGINE NEWARK LIBERTY INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT AS WORLD-CLASS GATEWAY, CHARTING COURSE FOR ADDITIONAL MODERN TERMINALS, STREAMLINED ROADWAY AND MORE EFFICIENT RUNWAYS The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey today announced the unveiling of the EWR Vision Plan, a wide-ranging blueprint setting the course for the Newark Liberty International Airport’s continued development over the coming decades to accommodate passenger growth with modern, world-class terminals on par with the Port Authority’s lauded reconstruction of LaGuardia Airport, its historic $19 billion transformation at John F. Kennedy International Airport, and Newark Liberty’s award-winning new Terminal A. The EWR Vision Plan was developed in partnership with design firm Arup and architecture firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill. It charts a comprehensive reimagining of the airport, complete with modern terminals and infrastructure, a more intuitive roadway network, and a redesigned taxiway network to accommodate more aircraft and reduce delays. The blueprint enables the airport to handle future growth, while serving the evolving needs of passengers, airlines, and the surrounding community. It was developed following extensive outreach to airport tenants, operational partners, and the public. To read the full press release, click here: https://lnkd.in/eNn2FPdV

I found this interview with my colleague, Peter Ruggiero, in The Wall Street Journal really interesting. He talks about designing airports that are intuitive, calming, and enjoyable. He also discusses rethinking how these spaces function to serve a growing number of travelers. This past year, I’ve had the opportunity to work on my first aviation project, with HOK, at Dallas Fort Worth Airport. It has been fascinating learning about the complexities of airport design and operations. Check out the interview with Peter below! #AviationDesign #AirportInnovation #HOK

Imagine transforming old metro cars into community spaces that celebrate art and culture while contributing to sustainable development. That’s exactly what MR-63 Montreal has done. In Anthony Arquin’s latest article for Commercial Real Estate Magazine, he speaks to the nonprofit’s co-founders, Étienne Morin-Bordeleau and Frédéric Morin-Bordeleau, who since 2018 have been creating ephemeral cultural and gastronomic installations using the iconic 1966 metro cars. Now, these cars will take centre stage in a permanent multifunctional pavilion project on the Place William Dow, in the heart of Montréal’s Griffintown neighbourhood.
